Trey Morgan (and friends) impact the World in 30 Days

When Trey Morgan needed someone to volunteer his time for a day at the American Cancer Society, the radio personality did not have far to go. Good friend and R&B recording artist Jason Derulo was more than happy to take some time out of his busy schedule to contribute.

Which is exactly what 30 Deeds, 30 Days was all about — finding time to impact the world regardless of our busy lives and busy schedules.

You could call Morgan the real life “Mr. Deeds”. By day, you may hear him as the “voice of now” on NYC’s Z100. By night? Let’s just say it’s when he puts on a cape and changes the world. No, Trey Morgan is not Superman but his 30 Deeds, 30 Days project was super cool.

Beginning on September 1 and concluding on the final day of the month, Morgan spent each day volunteering with a different organization (30 total) all the while maintaining his daily gig at the radio station and spending time with his wife.

The whole point of 30 Deeds, 30 Days was to prove that most people want to help their communities but it’s too easy to make an excuse such as I’m too busy, too tired, etc. Consequently, not only did Trey raise awareness with the 30 different charities he worked with but also inspired others to get involved.

Recently, The Spotlight had an opportunity to chat with Trey. When asked if the 30 days went by fast or slow, he responded,

“Both. There were times when I would think that the end was so far away and out of reach, and then there were times that I would stop and say that I couldn’t believe how quickly it’s all flying by. It just depended on the day and how much or how little sleep I had gotten the night before.”

Throughout the duration of the project, Morgan added that he received a ton of mail from people who were both inspired and touched by 30 Deeds, 30 Days. While every day was memorable in one way or another, his stay with Musicians On Call was particularly special. He explained,

“I was at a hospital for children with severe disabilities. Some of the beautiful children were completely unresponsive. I, along with a musician, and the staff music therapist would walk from room to room singing, dancing and playing instruments.”

“To see the children light up at the sound of a guitar was amazing. For those brief moments, they were not stuck on the third floor of a hospital; they were carried away by the sound of live music. It was there that I realized that no matter what happens, there is some poor kid or family on the third floor of some hospital dealing with issues far bigger than my own. It was life changing.”

In addition to Jason Derulo, celebrities like Selena Gomez, Dr. Oz, Rosie O’Donnell and Good Charlotte also helped out on different days. While Morgan believes that it’s important for celebrities to do charity work because they are role models for many, he also reminds that “this is our world; we should all try to make it a better one.”

What if a teenager wants to get involved in his or her particular community? What can that individual contribute, especially if they are short on money? Trey advised,

“First thing I would suggest is to think about the things you like and are interested in. If you love playing sports then maybe volunteering at the Special Olympics would be a good fit. Think along those lines. Then I would talk to your parents and ask if they can help. Lastly, I would encourage teens to put away their own insecurities and shyness and go for it. You have the chance to change the world, don’t miss it.”
