Washington, D.C. filled it’s at-risk summer school program with students by paying them $5.25 an hour to go to class. While some see it as a great plan to get teens to show up for class others debate that it sends the wrong message. One local politician says, “It’s critical that we get at-risk students and under-performing students and failing students into the program, but I don’t think incentivizing them with money sends the right message.”

What do you think–should students get paid to go to summer school?

More students might be inclined to pass if they got paid.

People shouldn’t be paid to go to school period. If they want to be failures, fine. Let them. But don’t pay them to be failures. That’s a giant contradiction when our school systems tell us that we should succeed. Whoever came up with the idea of paying students to go to school is a complete idiot. You go to school to learn, to better your future, not for money. Not to mention your school is free to you. Maybe not to your parents, but to you it is. Education is this country is handed out for free already and an education is priceless. Instead of students seeing money as a reward maybe they should start looking ahead 10-20. That’s where these 13 years of school pay off.

no i dont think kids should get paid for summer school … thts wouldnt b fair to the other kids who dont go to summer skool … thts just another reason for kids to fail jus to go to summer skool so thy can get money for it if anyone should b gettin paid thn the kids with a’s b’s & c’s shood get paid not the bad kids who dont care

if anyone was to get paid it should be the kids who passed the year not the kids who dod jack **** and failed. its their fault and if they fail clearly they don’t care.

I think people should be paid for going to school in general. Unless it’s college, no one chooses what school to attend and is forced to go, so why not get paid? I would’ve loved school so much more if I got paid.

People go to summer school because they’ve not done so well in classes during the normal school year, why should they get paid for doing badly?
It’s a stupid idea. If it’s brought about it’s going to give students more reason to bring their grades down, knowing if they have to go to summer school they’ll at least get money out of it.

Uh, absolutely not! Normally, students who are going to summer school are going because they didn’t do their work or do a good job of it when they were assigned it. They should not be rewarded for doing so poorly that they are having to re-do what they should have already done.
