Lesbian character on Pretty Little Liars fuels boycott

Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell) is one of the main characters on the hit ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars and earlier this year came out as a lesbian creating quite the controversy with the Florida Family Association.
The conservative organization launched a campaign asking advertisers to pull ads from the TV series because of what the FFA defined as “irresponsible imagery” and it could be working because in the past couple of weeks Remax Realty and General Mills have pulled ads.
Is it related to FFA’s boycott?
A rep for General Mills told AfterEllen.com, “The decision is entirely based on the relevance of the show’s audience for our brands, not because of the sexual orientation of individual characters.”
Do you believe there is still a general backlash toward gay/lesbian characters on TV Shows? Do advertisers have the right to pull ads if they do not support gay rights?
