Katy Perry (birth name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson) is an American singer-songwriter and actress. She was born in Santa Barbara, California and raised by Christian pastor parents. As a result, Perry grew up listening exclusively to gospel music and first got her start singing in the local church.

Music has always driven Perry who decided to get her GED during her first year of high school in order to pursue a career full-time. In 2001, Perry released a self-titled gospel album that did not manage to achieve much success.

However, she continued to press forward eventually signing with Capitol Music Group in 2007. There, she officially adopted the stage name “Katy Perry” and released her first Internet single “Ur So Gay”. Despite the¬†outlandish title, Perry did not achieve mainstream recognition until “I Kissed a Girl” exploded in 2008.

Since that time Perry has released One of the Boys (2008) and Teenage Dream (2010). Perry is one of the highest selling artists in the industry. She is also married to British comedian Russell Brand.
