We recently sat down with Chris Pearson from the new band "Barefoot" for an interview about the band’s debut album hitting the stores in early January 2006.

TeenSpot: Which Chris am I talking to now?

Barefoot: Chris Pearson

TS: Oh okay, you play the piano, right?

BF: I play piano and guitar, yeah man.

TS: Mmmmkay.

BF: How’s it goin’?

TS: Pretty good, I’d like to ask you a few questions if that’s okay?

BF: Yeah, ask away!

TS: Barefoot is a relatively new group. Maybe you could start off telling us how Barefoot came to be.

BF: Three of the guys--Clay, Matt, Jason--all grew up together. They were playing in a band since they were fourteen/fifteen with each other, and me and the other Chris went to high school and then to college together. I met Clay on a road trip in college. He was just a friend of a friend. It was just the merging of two bands. We used to practice together a little bit and then next year we were all working at a studio and recording stuff, so it was like, "Hey, everyone come play in band," and that was it.

TS: Well, at first I thought you guys were a... boy band, hah.

BF: Ahhhhhh! Noooo...

TS: I was like, "Noooo, I don’t want to interview a boy band..."

BF: Haha, no no, it’s rock and roll, I promise!

TS: I was reading your bio, and I saw that you guys all have pretty unique tastes in music.

BF: Oh, yeah, man! It’s kind of five guys with five different tastes which is kind of cool because when you write songs you have lots of different formats to bring to the table.

TS: So... there’s five guys in the group, right?

BF: Yeah.

TS: Do you think that everyone contributes equally do the group?

BF: Yeah, man, it’s a big democracy! Clay and Jason or I will write an entire song, and Clay will add a part, or Munselle will write it, and Clay and I will come back and work on it later... I mean, we literally throw it all out on the table. We all come up with stuff on our own, and we throw it onto a big smorgasbord and mix it around.

TS: Where does the name "Barefoot" come from?

BF: A buddy of mine in high school came up with the name. It was just our high school band, and when we all left for college we kind of resurrected it our freshman year of college and it stuck around. It’s one of those names--it doesn’t really mean anything, it doesn’t really have a lot of significance in the name. It’s kind of like your street name. You don’t always pick your street name, but it’s home, you know?

TS: What makes Barefoot different from what's on the radio right now?

BF: Well, it’s not necessarily anything that hasn’t been done before. We do four part harmonies (which is probably why you thought we were a boy band). We don’t do that on everything, we do a lot of Crosby, Stills, Nash stuff. Ahh, so you know, Jason (our drummer sings), Clay (the guitar player) sings, Munselle sings, and then I’m singing all the time. I guess I’m the lead vocalist, but it’s really the harmonies that set us apart.

TS: The first single off of Barefoot's debut album is called "Rain." What can you tell us about this song?

BF: We wrote that in Sweden, over in Stockholm. Uhh, we were working with a guy who actually ended up producing our album and it was the first song that came from this batch of songs while we were on a European trip. It was a song based upon that piano riff and we kind of built everything else around that riff. The lyrics came pretty quickly; we knew kind of where we were going with it. It was really just a song about human interaction. It’s a story that’s been told a thousand times before: Love life, God, and some other stuff all thrown into one.

TS: What is your favorite song off the new album, and why?

BF: Favorite song of ours?

TS: Yep!
BF: Ahh, you’d have to poll me personally on that one... I don’t want to speak for the other guys. There’s a track at the end of the CD called "Don’t Look Back." It’s kind of a motorcycle drive by, sort of anthemy song.

TS: Do you have any plans to take this album on the road for a tour?

BF: We do! We’re on an acoustic tour right now, actually.

TS: You guys, I think, are performing for the MTV awards after party?

BF: Yeah! We just found out about that today and we’re really excited!

TS: Where do you guys see the band in a year? Is music a passion for you guys or...

BF: Music is a HUGE passion for all of us!

TS: Easy way to meet girls?

BF: Haha, it is in a sense, but I don’t think that any of us necessarily want to date girls right now. You know what I mean. I mean, we all have lots of friends from home and college... I mean, you know how that works. It’s all kind of new to us, so we’ll take that and everything with a grain of salt

TS: Well, you guys are signed with Papa Joe Records, which is Ashlee and Jessica Simpson's dad's label, right?

BF: Yeah!

TS: How’s that working for you all?

BF: He was actually our manager; I mean he still is our manager. We signed with Geffen about a year ago and later on they gave him his own branch of Geffen called "Papa Joe" and he definitely wanted us to be under his label and we said, "Absolutely man, it would be a pleasure." We thought we could help him launch that while we’re launching our stuff as well, so... it’s worked out well.

TS: Ahh, have you ever met Ashlee and Jessica?

BF: Have we met them?

TS: Yeah...

BF: Haha, yeah they’re old family friends. We actually all grew up together. My dad and Joe went to college together and worked at a bunch of churches together off and on through the years. So, yeah... we’ve know them for a long time.

TS: Who are some other bands or musicians that you enjoy? Or you personally, I guess.

BF: Uh... inspiration?

TS: Yeah.

BF: My biggest would have to be a band called Guster.

TS: Guster?

BF: Guster, yeah, have you heard of them?

TS: Actually yeah, I have!

BF: No way, that’s awesome!

TS: Yeah.

BF: Well, yeah, it’s Guster and Jackopierce probably. Dave Matthews for sure. I didn’t get into the guitar until late high school. I loved all of that acoustic singer/songwriter. So yeah.

TS: What do you think about political music?

BF: That’s a good question. I think music is definitely an individual’s way of expressing their beliefs and their feelings. Umm, I don’t think that people should stand up unless they know what they’re talking about. I’m not much of a politician, so I don’t know. I don’t necessarily think that musicians know per say what is going on, whereas whoever is president is being advised every other minute of the day. You know, he has hundreds and thousands of advisers and I don’t think that us as consumers absolutely know what is going on per say. Does that make sense?

TS: Yeah, definitely.

BF: I don’t want to drop any names, so that’s all I have to say about that.

TS: Haha, okay. So, I’m sure you have an iPod?
BF: Yeah, bro!

TS: What kind of music would we find on it?

BF: Right now I’ve been listening to a band called Sigur-ros. Sigur-ros, I’m looking at Christian, Crosby, Stills, and Nash. You like that stuff?

TS: Heh, yeah, man. That’s old town man.

BF: Hah, yeah bro, that’s the kind of stuff that’s a big input to the band. So yeah, I love Crosby, Stills, and Nash. I was listening to Wilco last night on the plane. I’m also listening to new Coldplay as well.

TS: Haha, so... here’s another random question for ya. If you could own any car in the world, what would it be?

BF: Any car in the world... hmm... if I could own any car in the world I would own a 1994 GMC Sierra.

TS: A pickup?!

BF: Yeah, it’s a pickup... it’s a beast of a truck. Step-side. I don’t know how that thing’s still running.

TS: Hahaha, nice. So... we already kind of talked about this, but uh, do you have a girlfriend?

BF: I do not have a girlfriend... I am in the market, hah. You don’t have to put that, but uh, haha.

TS: Haha, don’t worry, but uh, is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans? Potential fans?

BF: Just thank you guys for the support, and come check out the album! Give us your feedback. What are we doing right? What are we doing wrong? I guess you can’t really do anything wrong with music, that’s the beauty of it.

TS: Well, thank you very much, Chris!

BF: Yep, take care, man!
