![]() TS = TeenSpot (Gary) HG = Home Grown (Dan) TS: Hi there, could you introduce yourself and tell us what you do... HG: Hi, my names Dan and I play guitar for the band known as Home Grown. TS: So, how is the tour going? HG: Awesome man. Totally awesome. We toured over here awhile back and it was all good so we kinda knew what to expect. I guess being with all the drive thru guys makes it just that little bit more special. TS: Has there been a dramatic change compared to the UK and the USA legs of the tour? HG: Well, yeah man I think there has. We've toured so much in the US that i'm suprised they aren't sick of us already. Coming over here we're fresh and the fans are fresh so its a bit different for everyone. The fans over here seem alot more stoked. TS: What do you think has been the highlight of it all so far? (Including USA legs) HG: Wow, that's alotta shows.... I dunno.... TS: Maybe you could explain the limp you've got? HG: Oh the limp... haha well er, last night I er was really drunk haha and all the guys in The Early November and Hidden In Plain view were jumping off this er, rail thing onto the street and I thought it would be cool if I did it too so I tried to jump higher than them but realised that I'm alot older and fatter than them so I pretty much nearly broke my foot on impact haha TS: Probably a good job you didn't then seeing as the last night of the tour is tonight HG: Yeah hah, lucky but I guess I should know better. I wouldn't call that a highlight! TS: What are your plans post tour? HG: Uh, well we leave tomorrow actually and then we've got a five day tour with a band called Mest, back in the states, we do that and then er, we actually start recording an ep we're putting out, probably a four song. TS: Actually someone has mentioned that, what can we expect with the new material? HG: We're gonna do some songs that are gonna be on the coming album. It's definately experimenting alot more with different instruments. It's got a... I guess I'd say 80's sound to it. A little different but still Home Grown y'know. TS: Could you tell us a little about your relationship with Drive-Thru? HG: I've never been on any label but Richard and Stefanie are so personal with the bands. So involved. They like to be a big part of everything. It's weird because all of the bands... like, know each other so well and we're all really good friends. It just seems like more of a family. It feels NICE! The strangest thing was when we started the Drive thru tour and all the bands turned up on one spot and it was like woahh we're all friends already. TS: A bit of a reunion then? HG: Well yeah basically because usually the first few dates of a tour you're meeting new bands and stuff throughout the week. This has just been a party from start to finish. TS: What do you think about the new Drive-Thru-Records signings? (Jenoah and Hellogoodbye) HG: I've only heard one song each from both of them and I liked both the songs. The Hellogoodbye I really liked because it had kinda an 80's dance feel which is the route we're taking but we've not taken it as far as these guys. Not quite as drastic! TS: If you could sign any band to Drive-thru as your labelmates, who would you sign? HG: Hmm, theres a band I really really like right now called Recover. TS: Recover? HG: Recover. I think they are pretty much one of the greatest rock bands right now. Solid tough rock. TS: Like the Darkness? HG: No, not like the Darkness but I like the Darkness! I think that's called cock-rock though. TS: Yeah, haha. TS: If you were asked to write a song about your label, how would it go? HG: If I wrote a song about drive thru..? Haha. I've never had that one before. No idea. Ahahahha, shit I can't answer that hahaha. Uhh. $@#%. TS: $@#% would be the first line!? HG: Aah yeah I guess hah, I can't think of anything. TS: How and where do you see yourself and the band in say, 5 years time? HG: Wow. Well, 5 years I dunno, hopefully doing better. Y'know, bigger. Playing bigger shows I dunno, being happy with what we're doing. Enjoying shows. I mean Home Grown's been together for 10 years already so another 10 years will be like 20. A long damn time. TS: It's suprising, alot of people don't realise how lnog you've been on the scene. Would you say that you're current material is your peak? HG: Uh I don't think so. I think the four year break that the band kinda took almost, I don't wanna say killed off, but like lost alot of their old fans. All of the fans kinda grew up and lost touch. Stopped listening, but, Kings of Pop, well, kind of made a really brand new fanbase. I mean we'll play an old song and no one will know it but we'll play something from Kings of Pop and everyone will sing along. It's kinda like a starting over so I definately don't think this is our peak. TS: What are your favourite and least favourite tracks to play live? HG: My favourite track to play live... is, Cannot Stop the World because I just really like the guitar parts in it. It's just a great song. It's definately not the biggest crowd pleaser. And my least favourite... would be... probably I'd say I love you not. Not that I really hate playing it, it's just that it's one of the most poppiest slowest songs we've written and it's kinda hard to rock out to it. TS: Could you try and define your music style for us? HG: Pop rock skat I dunno, I think Home Grown stands out a little from other pop punk bands. We've got our own kinda sound. I've never been able to pin point it but yeah. TS: What do you think about the whole punk rock / emo categorization? HG: Well we're not punk. I think y'know, I don't think bands that play music like us aren't punk. It's fast progessive pop rock but it's obviously labelled punk. I guess it's punk for what it's worth but we're not really punks. I hate the emo thing. TS: Do you have a favourite website? HG: Yeah actually I do! I go to polkaroom.com and I gambling online. You play for fake money on there. You can play for real money but I don't, I just like pretending and buidling up like a billion dollars. It's kinda fun. TS: How do you feel about internet filesharing? HG: Um, y'know. I do it. I definately download music. I think it's definately probably hurting the music industry but you can't really stop the future. For smaller bands it really helps them alot. It's like it only really hurts the big record labels. Bands will get more fans, sell more merch so from that respect it's a good thing but I can see the problems with record sales. TS: What's the weirdest thing you've had thrown on stage during a show? HG: One time, well not the weirdest thing, well I guess maybe the weirdest thing... these kids, they always like to play us their demos... this really upset me hah, anyway these kids right on the front row threw this cd and it hit me right on the forehead and like smashed. I just stamped on it I was so pissed off.
