Due to the success story of Nickelback last year it would seem that Default are destined to live life in the shadows in terms of the recent 'nu-grunge' movement... however, from the depths this album casts a glimmer of hope for those who lost hope over the last year as to the state of modern grunge.

Obviously it goes without saying that grunge, as a whole has a very samey kind of sound. However, it's a bands ability to produce unique, interesting songs that don't bore you after 10 minutes that makes them stand out. I'm not entirely sure where Nickelback came from, or exactly where they've gone, but throughout Default have remained prominent, but not popular... combining hard riffs and memorable lyrics to produce a sound thats both unique AND interesting... if you like Nickelback, you'll love Default. You can't not.

Elocation is the latest offering from the Candian quartet. Although this album does not really top anything that the band did on their last one, it must be said that they are a band you just have to forgive. The main reason being, as discussed previously, 'grunge' and hard rock bands have a certain style which they like to stick to. If the new Default CD didn't sound like the old Default CD, there would be uproar. It's not what fans want, it's not what the band wants... and thus, this cd is Default through and through.

The twelve new tracks on this album have however shown the world that Default can diversify and still have that unique twang that brings you back to have another listen. This album, and infact, this band, are very underrated. The tracks portray a... maturity over the last couple of years.

Opening with the melodic anthem, 'Who Followed Who', it's apparant from the very start that Default are on top writing form and mean business.

'Moving On' slows things down a little and shows the more melodic side of the band, even if 'Who Followed Who' have a very unique sound.

By far though, my favourite track from the album has to be Enough. I can't quite put a reason as to why, it's just a different kind of Default sound. Something I look forward to hearing more of.

Also, the addition of an acoustic version of 'Let You Down' gives new fans a taster of exactly what they've missed so far in the story that is Default. I can only suggest you go and pick up 'The Fallout'. It's worth a listen.

However, This story does have two sides.

Compared to The Fallout, this CD lacks greatly in originality, that's not however to say it's not good. It is. This album effectively sounds as if it should have been released as their debut and The Fallout should be the new record. Still, it's a good effort for a second album and we can only look forward and keep our fingers crossed to what the band may offer us in their next release.

If you're not a grunge/hard rock fan, this album's definately not for you. I suggest you try Nickelback. Also, don't make the mistake I did and assume that Default were going to be similiar to them. Personally I believe that they are better, but that's my opinion. I'm a hard rock fan and I'm not ashamed to admit.

This album, will of course undoubtedly have a Nickelback ring to it though, due to Chad Kroeger (Lead, Nickelback) having a helping hand with the production of the album. Take that as face value though. He didn't write the album, he helped produce it. It's Defaults to play with.

To summerize... all in all, this CD portrays a very different image of modern grunge / hard rock. It's the nitty gritty that many bands leave out and for this reason alone it's beyond refreshing. A truely rocking album, and one that certainly won't be leaving my cd player for awhile, with the only exception being The Fallout which I've re-discovered my love for thanks to this album.
