In discovering The Webb Sisters, one finds themselves with two perfect reasons to enjoy female-folk rock. Well, I say two. One of them is possibly only particularly relevant if you are a male of the species (well, two to be technical) but the other reason is the simple fact that this toe tapping little track ’Still The Only One is out and out a mighty fine track.
The sisters, Charley and Hattie Webb both seemingly have music running through their veins. Parental guidance led them to both being classically trained from a young age, Charley choosing the more common guitar as her signature instrument whilst Hattie opted for the more avant-garde harp. Sharing vocal duties, the girls collectively sound not a million miles away from The Corrs, who let’s face it, despite being an out and out pop band weren’t too offensive on the ears.
‘Still The Only One’ is an emotive, beautifully crafted track which carries you through a range of emotions not only lyrically but also with its harmonies and hooks. The fact that it was produced Youth, who also worked with Dido explains a lot as the track relies heavily on the vocal ability of the girls to create a sense of atmosphere which is rarely heard these days in traditional pop songs.
It’s good to see some female musicians getting some recognition. I say musicians, because 99% of female pop stars out there probably couldn’t play an instrument if they tried. Harp, guitar and vocals… who’d have thought it eh.
