Tonight was to be my first time to the Camden Underworld. Uncle Brian followed by Simple Plan was the lineup... and after seeing the two support Bowling For Soup not too long ago, I needed to know if the Astoria had done either of these two bands any justice at all, and I'm glad I bothered.
Perky pop punkers Uncle Brian tonight proved to me that their potential is great. Quickly becoming one of the most talked about bands on the scene, Uncle Brian attract a good proportion of the crowd. Their short but sweet set pleased all, from the kids on the floor to the mums and dads perched along the side of the dancefloor. Bringing a refreshing sound to the pop-punk scene, UB are certainly aiming high, but keeping their feet right on the ground. Playing a damn good set seems to come natural to them, even in this pokey little venue on the milk crate size stage. Definately a band to look out for in the near future!
Simple Plan didnt dissapoint either. An electric set from one of the latest offerings from over yonder seas. Undoubtedly inspired by some of todays biggest names in the pop punk world, the guys seem to have a certain originality about them which stands out in a scene full of Blink 182s and Sum 41s. The small stage and tightly packed venue didnt make playing easy, especially when theres 5 members in the band. That close and intimate feeling really makes the difference from when I last saw these guys. Venues like the Astoria cant do intimacy.
A generally good show, with little to complain about. Both bands played very good sets and were met with a good reaction from the packed, if not slightly younger than average crowd.
Who needs Blink 182 when you've got Uncle Brian..?
