The chat applet won't load. What do I do?

There are a number of reasons why the chat room may not work correctly for you.

Our chat rooms are powered by a popular technology called Java. If you are having problems with the chat rooms, the first thing you should do is install the latest version of Java onto your computer. Download Java for free here. After you install Java, please exit all of your web browser windows and try the TeenSpot chat rooms again.

If you have tried installing the latest version of Java, the next step you should take is restarting your computer. Believe it or not, a lot of problems can be solved if you just try and restart your computer first. If this does not fix your problem, then there are a few other things we can try. Clearing your Internet history and cookies is a good place to start. (If you clear your cookies, you will be required to relogin to TeenSpot.) Also, make sure that you are using the newest version of your browser. We recommend you use Mozilla Firefox. It is a very popular and full-featured browser... and it is completely free.

Another thing to remember is that when you load the TeenSpot chat room applet for the first time, a window will popup asking you if you wish to allow the ChatSpace Java client to install. You must select "yes" or "run" for the chat room to load!

The last thing we would like to point out is that every few weeks the administrators of the chat rooms restart the chat server in order to ensure quickness and quality chatting for everyone. If the chat room says something like "Connection refused" or something along the lines of that, it most likely means we are working on the chat rooms and that you should try back later.

If none of these solutions are the right answer for your problem, please contact us and we will help you figure something out. Who knows? Maybe more than one person is having the same problem you are.

What are moderators and how do I become one?

Moderators are people who volunteer their time to make sure that the chat rooms are safe for all. They are not paid for their time and they do not expect to be. The administrators of the chat server are people who choose moderators based on their relationship to them (usually).

We are not accepting new moderators at this time, so please do not ask a current moderator to become one. They cannot make you one even if they wanted to. Asking to become a moderator will only get you ignored and then if you happen to need help from a moderator, they will have you on silenced mode so they will not be able to receive messages from you and you will not receive the chat support you need.

How do I use colors?

In the past versions of our chat software, this was very hard to do. Now, there is a special option for it.

If you are using the original chat client, connect to the chat server and click on the Options tab at the very top of the chat applet. Once you are there, click on the Colors button on the right side. From there you will be presented with a chat colors dialogue screen. The rest is pretty self-explanatory.

If you are using the new chat client, connect to the chat server and if you look right underneath the area where you type, you will find five buttons. The last two buttons are the buttons used to change your text foreground color and your background color.

Why do people in the members list have numbers like "~01~" infront of their names?

The reason people on the members list have numbers like that is because they are using the new chat client and have chosen to have an avatar infront of their name. You can't see the avatar because you are using the original chat client which doesn't support chat avatars. The people who have the numbers in front of their names will also appear at the bottom of the members list. You will also find that you can't P2P the users with the numbers next to their names. You will get an error that says something like "***~12~UsersName No information available." To get around this, just type "/profile UsersNameHere" and it will open up a P2P with that user.

How do I private message someone?

To send a private message (also known as a P2P) simply double click on the nickname of the person you wish to contact. After you do this, a new window will popup for your private conversation. If you know the nickname of the person you'd like to private message but you're not sure which room they are in simply type "/profile nickhere" without the quotes and it will open up the popup with your private conversation.

How do I change rooms?

It is very simple to change rooms while using the chat rooms.

On both of the original and new chat applets, there is a tab on the top that says "Rooms" on it. Click that tab to get a live list of chat rooms on the chat server.

What are colors next to nicknames?

This was originally stated as a bug in the chat applet, but after we did some investigating we have found it to be popular among the chatters. It is basically an exploit of the /away command.

How do I ignore members?

On both of the original and new chat applets, you right click on the member's nickname in the member list and click on the option that reads Ignore Member. This will ignore the member's nickname only. If you wish to ignore all messages from the IP address of this member, click on Ignore Member's Domain.

How do I register rooms?

Room registration is disabled on the TeenSpot.com chat rooms. We have done this for a number of reasons. In the future we may be offering registered rooms at a low fee per month. If we decide to do this, we will alert the members. This is also why we have not taken out the area to "create your own room" on the chat applet.

What are the rules of the chat room?

Here are a few unofficial rules that we think you should follow on the chat rooms and actually, life in general. Don't forget to read our Acceptable Use Policy. The AUP is the official set of rules for TeenSpot.com.

1. Don't talk in UPPERCASE. In chat rooms, talking in UPPERCASE letters is considered "shouting" and is very annoying to read. You won't make a lot of friends by talking in UPPERCASE text.

2. Don't ask to be a moderator. The TeenSpot.com administrators usually choose room moderators who do not ask to be one and who are always at TeenSpot.com trying to help others.

3. Don't join a room and leave it without saying anything. This is impolite and really annoying.

4. Don't lurk or idle in chat rooms. Don't sit in a chat room and not say anything. Chat rooms are for everyone to discuss things. If you are new to the chat room simply say that you are new and ask to watch the conversation for a while. If you are going away from your keyboard for a while, tell the chat room this!

5. Don't be impatient for responses. Some users are connected at a slow speed to TeenSpot.com's chat system and cannot get your messages instantly. They also might not be a very quick at typing.

6. Don't be a jerk. Flooding, repeating, advertising web sites, harassing people, and swearing is not cool. Most likely you will be kicked or banned for doing these things anyway so please don't do them.

How old do you have to be?

The general rule of thumb for age restrictions at TeenSpot.com is thirteen through twenty-five. We do not allow members under the age of thirteen to use our website.

Can I use the TeenSpot.com chat applet on my webpage?

No, you cannot. Websites found using TeenSpot.com chat applets will be prosecuted.

How do I change my password?

After logging into TeenSpot with the desired nickname click "Edit Profile" and then under Login Information you will see "change password."

My nickname has been hacked. What do I do?

We cannot do anything about this. This is why we recommend using a good, secure password when you register your nickname for the first time.

What are profiles?

Profiles are basically "about me" areas. To access you profile, click "View Profile" from the TeenSpot.com homepage. To edit your profile click "Edit Profile" from the TeenSpot.com homepage.

How do I change my nickname?

In the past you were able to change your nickname while in the chatrooms, however this has now been disabled.

Why was I kicked/banned from the chat room?

The most common reason for getting kicked or banned from the chat room is flooding. Flooding is when you type more text than what is allowed in a certain amount of time. After you have been kicked, you may re-enter the chat room. To re-join the chat room, click on the Rooms tab and find the chat room you would like to use. Then, double click it.

If you have been banned from the chat room, please remember that normal bans are erased every 30 seconds. If you have been banned from the chat server completely, you must have done something really bad. Server bans are usually placed for an unknown amount of time.

There are certain occasions when you will get kicked or banned unintentionally. Please bare with us when this happens. Nobody/nothing is perfect.
