While i was at school and i needed to learn something especially from history, i learned it best if i read it as a story or something. Just trying to memorize facts was futile for me.
After you read it try to outline most important stuff about everything you read in couple of main groups, then less important stuff from those groups below in those categories. That way you wont have to memorize lot of facts. Also you are more likely to recall something if you read it from interesting story so even if you dont memorize all facts you might be able to recall something.
Hope this helps, if you can tell us what part of history you are trying to learn we might be able to help you better.

Read it. Then read it some more, keep reading it as if you enjoy it and its your interest. It works.
Or swap your brain for a new model.

Implement or teach someone immediately after revising.
This helps to retain what you learn.

Don't study before bed. When you wake up... its all gone.
