Default Career in the arts - yay or nay?

Do you plan to pursue it? If not, did something discourage you?
Merrr, I dunno. Any thoughts? Experiences?

I'm actually going to start my art career later this year or next year. I will tell you from what I read from experienced artist, if you want to become a serious artist and make a living, you really have to market yourself and get yourself out there as much as you can. Some artist barely get by and have to have a second job for a living, others are making a comfortable living off of selling their artwork. I hope to make a living off of my artwork. It's my passion to create, and I'd like to have a career in the arts.

All I have to say, is it can be discouraging from family and friends. They will tell you that you're probably not going to get anywhere with an art career. True, it can be challenging to be a successful artist, but you can't let people tell you you're not going to get anywhere.

No, don't ever tell yourself that you're not good enough to be an artist. You should see how many artist get rich off of selling lines, splatters, and blobs. I've seen artist price paintings like this $2,000 + and people buy them. There's an inner critic in every single one of us that tells us we're not good enough, but you never know if you don't try and get yourself out there. Have people seen your art before? Maybe get some opinions, and I'll guarantee there are people who will like your artwork. You'll always see the flaws in your own art, because you're the artist. If you looked at your finished art through someone else's eyes, you'd probably think your art is pretty good.

Somebody somewhere will want your painting or drawing on your wall.

Oh boy. I wish I could go to art school one day but I don't think I could live a life off of it, ya know? Plus I like drawing and art related things as a hobby and I would hate for it to become a chore to me. In my dreams I would pursue an art related career though.

I love drawing, but I've always gotten bad grades in art classes cuz I hate being told what to draw, and I can't draw something good if I have to draw a specific thing. I mainly draw abstract and always gotten told it was crap so yeah... :/

I'm in college to become a graphic artist. It can pay pretty well, and its not all done on the computer (if you aren't very computer savvy) It uses drawing, painting, photography, and computer skills. I've had a lot of support so far, nothing worth doing is ever easy.

I'm I_Crave_Hearts by the way. I noticed some people are pretty negative towards themselves and doing art as a career. I've always been told you'll be a happier person if you choose a career based on your interest/hobbies. If art is your passion, it will never feel like a chore if you enjoy it. What bothers me the most is people spend so much money for art colleges, to never be told how to make a successful career out of it. There are lots of artist struggling because they haven't learned about the business to art, and how to actually make a living from it.

It's because you have to create based on what you like. It's like sitting down and trying to write a song, poem, or book on a subject you don't feel for at all. It's kind of weird because a lot of abstract artist are always the ones to get away with selling $3,000 paintings. lol
