    Default Wisdom Teeth

I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out, and my appointment is May 31. None of my teeth are impacted which is good, but one is a bit angled and one is only about halfway through and then one they told me that they would probably have to cut some of the bone to get out. Fun, right?

Who has their wisdom teeth? What about who has gotten them taken out? I'm a little worried, but not too worried. My sister just got her out and it sucked a lot for her, but all four of hers were impacted so the oral surgeon told me my experience would be a lot easier.

Any stories or advice for when I get them out?

I had all 4 of mine taken out at once, none impacted...it was piece of cake although i started to wake during the operation and felt the doc pulling away at my tooth lol.. so they put me back to sleep in a hurry

Ihad a little numbness in my tongue for about 6 months but its back now, i guess theres a nerve thats easy to irritate back in that area. i was eating in a couple days, and make sure you keep the area clean, they should give you a rinse.

At 22 years old I still have my wisdom teeth. The dentist said that my mouth should be big enough to hold all of them perfectly fine. But they're still not all the way through the surface yet (they actually came in about halfway and then went back under again, joy that that was).

My fiancee had his wisdom teeth out last summer. For him it was not problem, and half the time he didn't even need the pain medication they told him to take. The only thing he said he really hated is that his dentist didn't put him under for it and he didn't have headphones, so while he couldn't feel it he could hear a gross sucking noise as they pulled the teeth out. So if you're not going to be put under, bring an mp3 or something.

Oh, I'm going to be put under! The oral surgeon asked if that's what I wanted and I was like yes, absolutely and signed the paperwork in a hurry! lol.

Lucky for me, my doctor told me the wisdom tooth wont affect the positioning of my overral dental teeth and alignments.. but best to take it out if its causing pain or dental "dis-alignment"

That is lucky. There's not really room for my wisdom teeth, one's not in at the right angle, and they're causing pain, so it's definitely best for them to come out.

I only have 3 wisdom teeth, for some reason I never had a 4th one. I still have all 3 (im twenty). My dentist has been telling me for YEARS to get them out, but I dont have the money or any reason to do so. They dont bother me so I dont care.

If mine weren't bothering me I wouldn't get them out. Mine didn't even come in until like this year and I'm 21.

I had all four of them taken out in December. They were all impacted to an extent - the bottom two were fully impacted, and the top two were partially impacted (they attempted to come in but there wasn't any room, so only half of each was out). Wisdom teeth removal here - especially if they are impacted - is considered surgery rather than dentistry, and I had to have them removed at the hospital and everything. They made me wear the gown with nothing underneath, but I was given the choice whether to be under anaesthetic or not - I chose to go under, as I didn't want to be awake while they cut me open. I had to arrive at the hospital at 8:30am for 10:30am surgery, and I didn't get called in until almost noon, so they were behind schedule. I woke up around 12:50pm and was very numb and groggy - I didn't know what to expect so I panicked when I couldn't feel parts of my body. A nurse reassured me that all my nerves were still waking up. I was able to leave by 2pm so long as someone was there to pick me up, and for the next six days I couldn't eat solid foods. They tell you not to eat solids until your stitches dissolve, which could be anywhere between an hour and seven days after the surgery. People warned me that I'd feel very drugged out when I woke up, and from my medication, but I didn't feel drugged out whatsoever from either. I just felt like me, but with an added pain.

^ Out of curiosity, where are you located?

Here getting your wisdom teeth removed is usually done by an oral surgeon (a dentist with extra training in oral/facial surgery), and unless there's some underlying medical condition you have that makes it unsafe to do so, the extraction is done at the office, not in a hospital.

Sounds like your experience was more intense than mine will be. I just have to be at the office a little before 11:30 (5-10 minutes early), and if they're on time right around 11:30 I'll go in and I was told the actual surgery itself takes about an hour (so about like your experience time-wise).

I've had anesthesia before and it didn't make me feel at all drugged when I woke up, I felt fine, just hungry since I hadn't eaten in over 12 hours...I'm hoping that this time around it'll be the same.

I'm in Canada, as you can see below my avatar - Northern Ontario to be exact. But I suppose it depends on the city, because my friend in another city had hers removed at a dentist's office, but me and everyone else I know who got them out in my city were required to get it done at the hospital. My assumption is because they were performing a surgery, and they probably wanted us to be at the hospital in case of any unexpected instant side affects, instead of needing to rush us there.

Interesting. It's still considered surgery here, but it's generally done at a dental office. Just goes to show differences based on location.

All 4 of mine were impacted. They knocked me out to do the surgery & it really didn't hurt that bad at all afterwards, I only took the painkillers for like the 2 first days.

    I hate my wisdom teeth.
They gave me trouble a few months ago, bitchin like cray cray. I just sucked it up because they weren't really coming in that much. I'm afraid that I'll have to go get them done sooner rather than later.
    Good luck with your pull.
Sometimes I wonder why I'm here. Other times I wonder whether I would want to be anywhere else.

Yeah, they hurt like a bitch when they're coming in! Mine would grow in some, stop, grow in more, stop etc. They're now as far in as they're gonna come though which is between halfway and fully in depending on the tooth.

When I had mine removed, I could barely remember what happened when I went into the office. I woke up in bed with blood in my mouth and a swollen face. It took about a week or two to get past the pain, but it wasn't too bad. I was sick of chocolate pudding for a long time though.

I plan on eating my fair share of chocolate pudding for sure. I'm not sure what else I'll really be able to eat.
