SPORT. I've been riding for 6 years, and theres a lot more to it then a non-rider would think. It gets intense when your riding either a green horse, or jumping higher courses for the first time. It's not for pussies.

certain events are sports, horse racing, rodeo, and a couple others. But contrary to what chey77 keeps babbling about, im willing to bet its by no means the most dangerous. Sure you can get crushed or trampled by a big animal, but thats mainly if you suck and dont know what the hell you are doing. A far more dangerous sport would be mui thai for example, the entire point of the sport is to beat the opponent to a bloody pulp, and its even more dangerous when you get over to thailand and half the time they fight with no gloves, and i'll just say an elboy square to the nose or forehead is far more likely to kill you, even as a pro then a pro riding a horse, seeing as how the point is to not fall off your horse in the first place.

SPORT
I'm so tired of people talking about my sport! We don't go around criticizing your "sports"! So why can't you just leave our little corner of the world ALONE!! You people go around writing things Like this and then get mad when we try our best to defend what we LOVE and LIVE to do! We have to communicate without words. We have to control these two ton beasts! When we first buy our horses they know NOTHING! We have to guide them and teach them, and yeah I guess that after a while the horse has learned enough that they can even help the rider a little at times, but once they get to that point, the horse and rider can accomplish any goal they strive to achieve. It takes years and YEARS of hard work, muscle building, and dedications to be able to walk into that arena and soar over obstacles taller than the average man. Or teach an animal to dance with you so your in perfect harmony. So to close I have to ask ALL of you, can you do THAT?

It is most definitely a sport. I have broken ribs, my collar bone and got a concussion from riding. Also lost 20 pounds, my muscles are hard as rocks. You go and fetch my horse from the field, tack it, ride for about 2 hours. Do 5 feet jumps, trot it make it canter and gallop. After groom it, muck out its stall, clean the tack. Oh and out in the winter ride it in the snow no gloves just a jacket. Make sure she is warm afterwards. Oh and train it for barrel racing. Try to stay in the saddle. Have fun. Its a sport.

I do barrel racing, jumping and eventing, trained my own horse. Bball as in basketball? I have but it isn't very tiring I mean sure you get out of breath and your legs get tired. But you're playing with a ball not a horse. Chey77 is a true rider who does a hard sport. A sport that is listed as 10 most dangerous sports. Plus basketball is just running around tossing a ball around. Horseback riding is a true work out. You burn calories and work all of your muscles. It hurts. But honey don't talk about something you know nothing about

I've been riding for 9 years and yes it's a sport and so much more. Horses have been my life ever since i was a little girl. I show horses and i used to flat track race horses as well. It takes a ton of skills. Skills that you don't just wake up one day and have. It's not something that's for everyone. Yeah, it's expensive and takes a whole hell of a lotta work to have your own horse but if it's your life, your sport and your dream, you find a way to make it happen. I've fallen off horses tons of times. I've torn the muscle under my shoulder blade, cracked several ribs, and broken multiple toes. Last year i trained my horse all summer to show. I rode her everyday for 4 months straight so that we could beat competition. So don't ANYBODY tell me horseback riding isn't a sport. It's a state of mind, a lifestyle, and a partnership.

it is most definetly a sport. I am a barrel racer. i have been in several accidents, broken several bones. i have been riding horses for almost 14 years. and katiesports17, its not as easy as you seem to think it is. ask anyone who rides horses competitively oulike i do. A horse is an animal. it has a mind all its own and you never really know what its thinking. a horse weighs on average a half ton. i would like to see a 3 or 4 pound basket ball do as much damage as a half ton horse. if you still dont think horse back riding is a sport then watch these youtube videos and think about how wrong you are.

And what did you do?
Walk around on a trail right behind another horse's ***?
Because yes, that is all you do is sit.
Hmm EVERY sport is a contact sport??
Track and field sure isn't a contact sport.
And if you were in a lesson or whatever on your "first try"... Tell me how all you did was walk and stop and how that was supposed to be difficult.
Go and learn flying lead changes.
Go learn how to jump.
Go learn how to canter.
Go learn how to break a horse.
Tell me all you do is sit.
You have no common knowledge of this sport.

..... You're kidding right?
Of course it's a sport. It takes an OBNOXIOUS amount of effort to ride a horse, let alone jump/race one.
You need mad leg and core muscles for it.
And you don't just "sit" there, you need to canter up and down. You could NOT do it on your first try; it takes like three years just to get the very bare basics down.
You're extremely ignorant -____-
Oh, and it's in the OLYMPICS, by the by.
And most sports do not involve contact at all... what are you talking about?
Gymnastic, baseball, track and field, swimming, diving, archery, biking.... should I continue?"It's all about sticking it out and trying to feel Forever Young..."

If you think horseback riding is "easy" maybe you should try riding a Green 3yr old horse. Then lets see what you think about it or maybe you should try to break a Wild horse(Bronc). I've broken my tail bone , My arms(both) ,Dislocated my knee cap , and Had my collarbone broken from being stepped on. Also try letting a 1,700 pound animal step on your foot and break your toes. Also if horse back riding wasn't a sport why is it in the Olympics?
