why do stores throw away
i just came back from QT, and one of the workers threw away a bunch of baked goods. they were fine, and i stole one from the bin and it tasted like the new batch. so why do stores throw away their items? ive seen them do the same thing in clothing stores. why cant they just give it to the shelters that need it?

Maybe they're paranoid that some of the ingredients might be past the expiration date and make someone sick and the person could sue them for selling old food. I don't know though i'm just guessing.

I work for a grocery store and I see this happen all the time with our baked goods. The ladies are nice enough to give the donuts to us and if a person pre-orders a cake and forgets to pick it up, we get that too. Everything else is tossed into "the BEAST". No idea why...

That's what I think too. And someone who got food from a shelter could really use the money!
Maybe if there was some way they could put some kind of disclaimer...

because they forgot they had some bud in the brownies and they put it in their safe to keep for themselves
I really don't know why, but maybe they throw it away because they don't have any way to transport it since the import trucks are import only

They don't want poor people wearing their name brand clothing. It creates a bad image for their apparel. I think they avoid donating food so they don't create a dependence on it for the shelters. The object of a business is to make money, so they don't want to throw things out or donate them. They'll avoid extra pressure by just throwing it away rather than having a shelter breathe down their necks to make another shipment. Plus, it would cost them money to have to re-box the food and reload the trucks. It's not cost effective, especially since the food is already shrinking the store.

It is also because if they did allow people to take away thrown out things, then employees will purposely throw away whatever they liked, and pick 'em up later.
I recall one worker from Wal-Mart once took all the clothes Wal-Mart had thrown out, and he donated them to a charity. Needless to say, he lost his job.

My friend works at a department store. When items are on the racks or shelves for a long time, or if they go out of style, they throw it all into a dumpster in the back of the store. It's so stupid, because those are things that the less fortunate can use. WTF. I doubt homeless people care about what's "in". Why not take the shit to a center or Goodwill?
He told me that one of his co workers decided he wanted the things instead of letting them just sit in the garbage. I can't remember if he got fired or not, or just a warning, though.

But I have heard of people getting fired on the spot for trying to take home food that was going to be thrown away anyway.

Basically, what ManPac said. I work at Kmart, and most Kmarts are supposed to lock their dumpsters. What's really sad is when we throw away finished goods just because they aren't selling. It really would be bad business to just give the shit away.
I work in the garden shop, and I throw away plants all the time. After last Christmas, I personally got rid of 300 pointsettias. It's too costly to maintain plants, so we get insects and diseases or even just lack of water. I try to keep a bare minimum maintenance on them, but we are constantly throwing shit out.

Yeah, most Kmarts. It's the worst big box store, hands down, so I'm not surprised when people tell me they haven't seen or been in one in a long time.

Tbh, in about a month, the slow season starts. It's never rly busy, usually like 3/4 customers an hour at most, but starting in January through April, I can be out there all night and never see anyone.
My job's pretty mellow. A lot of times, I just sit outside in the fall/winter breeze and watch the sun set. Not even kidding.
When I leave, I'm only gonna miss those G Shop nights like that and a lot of my coworkers. 2.5 years...

But I don't understand, how is throwing it away and completely wasting it ok, but donating it where it will actually get used bad business?

that makes me really frustrated. i feel like doing something about this. i guess giving back to their communities isn't as important as making money off of them. FUCK!
