HP has abysmal support. The machines themselves aren't horrible but I can't recommend them over anyone else.

I at least know Apple would sooner suck your dick than lose you as a customer so if you're looking for support they're nice.

I'd highly recommend dell for desktops and for laptops. Excellent systems and excellent support.

agreed, my Dell laptop is excellent and the support isnt bad, though for UK customers an expensive call to Ireland is required

It depends on the system. Dell's range from cheap low power systems to high-performance machines that cost several thousand dollars. You can definitely get a Dell that can handle graphic design work.

But i don't know where to look, as far as brands... ha, i have no problem admitting that i'm kinda ignorant on all this.

I try to ignore the constant Mac vs. PC battle banter, but its hard...
A part of me wants to get a Mac because i know people who have had their Macs for a good long while and they haven't failed yet, which is something everyone wants, duh. Many claim they are the best. but are they REALLY worth the higher price?

Cuz i also hear that PC's are just as goood and WAY cheaper (which is another factor i must consider, since this will be a combined graduation/birthday gift from my parents). If i go with PC, what brand?

I JUST DON'T KNOW.

you may ask questions to further analyze my situation..

and don't think this will be my primary source of advice. lol then i'd be REALLY ignorant. i just want to hear your own personal experiences!
THANKS.
well, unless they plan on giving you a crappy laptop for your gift, go for a solid high price, with laptops, alot of the time higher price usually means better upgrading capabilities.....but now im not talking about mac's......try alienware, they are at the high end of a pricerange for anyone but a better laptop, you cant find anywhere

There's so many blatant falsehoods in this post, I don't even know where to begin.

Get a PC.
Don't get a Dell.
And make sure it has Windows XP, not Vista.
That's all I can tell you.

What's all this talk about macs lasting longer than pcs? My gx280 must be ancient in pc years. Everyday pc users must be retarded, tossing their pcs away because they're fried from viruses. I haven't used anti virus software in years.

It's running on xp, but I'm upgrading to a Dell Studio XPS in another week. It's gonna be running on windows seven, but I'll never get rid of my optiplex. It's a great back up pc and lightening fast to be so old.

I'm not going to bother offering any more advice. You got it.
