Question I have NO idea where to start...

i'm trying to buy a laptop!
But i don't know where to look, as far as brands... ha, i have no problem admitting that i'm kinda ignorant on all this.

I try to ignore the constant Mac vs. PC battle banter, but its hard...
A part of me wants to get a Mac because i know people who have had their Macs for a good long while and they haven't failed yet, which is something everyone wants, duh. Many claim they are the best. but are they REALLY worth the higher price?

Cuz i also hear that PC's are just as goood and WAY cheaper (which is another factor i must consider, since this will be a combined graduation/birthday gift from my parents). If i go with PC, what brand?

I JUST DON'T KNOW.

you may ask questions to further analyze my situation..

and don't think this will be my primary source of advice. lol then i'd be REALLY ignorant. i just want to hear your own personal experiences!
THANKS.

For starters, macs r WAY overpriced and you could get a PC for less than half of it w/ the same, if not better, specs. But macs DO last a lot longer than PCs, even though it's not really worth it in the end for that price, but hey, your choice.

I would NOT recommend IBM or Acer for a main laptop. For me, I like having my Acer for just w/e I need to do on the road or w/e and having a desktop for most of my stuff. I really only need my laptop for taking notes in class on word or surfing the web, and my desktop can do all the other stuff I need.

If you want to go all out, I would definitely, DEFINITELY get an Alienware. <Best in the market and they are BEASTS!

Good, you're college age. Try getting XP through your school because no new laptop will ship with it. Then dual-boot that with whatever the hell OS it came with. This way you'll be able to be compatible with most anything.

I recommend Windows. However I know how to reinstall an operating system and I sure the fuck have done this a lot with Windows. If you don't, I don't see a problem with Mac.

Edit at above: Alienware is a good way to pay for a great machine at a much higher price than you'd ever need to for such a great machine.

Buy Alienware and you are just buying Dell with some flashy lights attached and doubled price.

Toshiba, and Acer, good ones.

alienware is bad,
macs are bad.
why?
your paying about 3xs what you can get the parts for, each part,
if you need a laptop i would go with a name brand, and would not reccommend hardware upgrades.
i have a gateway, its pretty good
just make sure this is in your new PC NOT MAC
windows 7 OS
3+gb of RAM
if possible an intel processor, they have better battery life. and are in general faster.
if it has intel, look at video card, if it has intel integrated graphics that's as low as you can go. if it says anything else, its good for your purposes.

anyways,
newegg.com has good name brand laptops
cyberpowerpc.com is also ok

you cant really go wrong with a dell... they make great computers and (maybe with a purchase of extended warranty) offer great support for hardware replacement on site support etc should you run into a problem, and they arent over priced.
2 of my friends have sony vaio's which they are happy with, though i havent personally had any experience with them.

id recommend against the macbook unless you only want the laptop to show off to every tom dick and harry that also has one, rather than actually using it.

really the smart thing too do would go to your local computer store, speak to someone there and let them know exactly what you want out of your computer and they will help you...

If you are really considering getting a mac, go to an apple store and actually try one out properly. Stand there for at least 30mins and try and do something constructive. That should put you off.

Get a dell.

I lol'd. It's funny because it's true. Macs really aren't worth the money unless you're inept with technology (and some people are, no shame in it) or have something you specifically would need a mac for, which is pretty much graphic design and video editing, end of list.

Also, I second the Dell recommendation. As far as a balance of price-point, build quality, and customer/technical support they're the best company I've dealt with.

If you do or plan to do a lot of image editing, video editing or 3D rendering then a MacBook Pro would suit you good.

Anything else, a PC would get the job done.

Basically, Get a Mac if you want to look cool. Get a PC if you want to actually get stuff done.

haha, alright alright.

well, i'm not inept when it comes to technology. i just can't decide on a brand..
and the thing is, i've been considering making my major something art related, which is why i've been agonizing over this decision.

ugh, but yes, thank you all for the comments so far.

tbh these days mac doesnt have any real advantage over windows as far as graphic design goes... both have photoshop and other similar programs, both run on intel cpus meaning theres no processing difference, but pcs will give you a faster computer for cheaper, making it a better option. the only real major point mac has is final cut pro for video editing.

Well... if you are pretty much technology defiant, then you should get a compaq, cuz reallly.. your not gonna want to go forth the expensive route and compaq is very stable and wont break on you. If it could come with Windows 7 then that would be awesome.

So you're saying if i were to go into graphic design or photography, a PC would suit me just fine? Macs are only real leaders when it comes to video editing?
