A 17 inch Macbook pro starts at $2499! Thats 1690.48 Euro for the basic 17 inch Macbook Pro. If you get customize one from Apples website you can select everything you want on a 17 inch Macbook Pro and it can go as high as $5,706.85 or 3,861.22 Euro for a Macbook that has 8gb of memory, a 500gb 720rpm hard drive, and a 3.06ghz Intel C2D. That still doesn't include the 256 gb solid state hard drive that you can get for an extra $600, roughly 400 more Euro. That would be over 4000 Euro for a 17 inch Macbook Pro

You left out a lot of good Operating Systems, like QNX, NetBSD, OpenBSD, OpenSolaris, AIX, HP UX, OS/2, and many good embeded Operating Systems, which are used every day, that goes unnoticed.
I saw it is a toss up between OpenSolaris, AIX, and OpenBSD.
WIth AIX, I really like being able to backup the OS on to Tape and than boot from it, makes for DR planning really easy. DB2 kicks ass on it. The Power series of CPUs are wow.
OpenBSD you have the security of the code, ease of working with it, and it is darn fast for Samba servers. Also makes a great Mail, and OpenLDAP servers. PF is one of the best Firewals out there.
NetBSD is excellent it runs on almost anything. It is small, fast, secure, as simlar features to OpenBSD but runs on more hardware.
With OpenSolaris, you have ZFS what should say it all. Makes a heck of a good desktop, laptop, and of course Server OS. But only runs on x86 and Sparc.

You gotta consider the small minority of the population who actually require these specifications, like myself.
I do A LOT of imaging and 3D work, and for the programs that I use, you either require a decent desktop PC, or a fucking good notebook. And those specs you've mentioned are somewhat hard to find in the regular business notebook range, if anything, those specifications would probably be on par with a high end gaming laptop.
But who wants to do actual work on a gaming laptop? They look unprofessional, which makes it hard for other people to take you seriously when it comes to actual work, not games. Which is why we fork out a little more cash for the fashionable and non geeky alternative, the MacBook Pro.

I don't know what your impression that you can't buy a normal high-performance PC laptop is based on, but it certainly isn't based on reality.

I'm saying that it's somewhat hard to find a high-performance laptop thats as reliable, as well equipped, and has a decent warranty as a Apple MacBook does, while not looking gimmicky or 'gamey' to the eye, as most high performing laptops look like.

I would just disrespect anyone who forked out the cash for that on the basis that they have more money than sense, and just about anyone with any eye for the IT industry would feel the same way.

Again, patently false.

That was the price for the base model 17 inch Macbook Pro. They can go for double that if ordered right.
