Ladies:
Do you feel that the Fashion industry/society/the media is effecting your body image?
Mine personally? No...
I mean, obviously I'd love to be tall and thin, but I'm not and luckily I'm a very secure person...
And actually in the last year or two I've learned to love my curves...
Guys like women who look like women...
If so, Positive or negative effect?
N/A
Do you feel like models in magazines are too thin?
Some of them are, yes...
I can understand that they are all really tall so they are obviously going to be thinner than shorter girls...
But some of them have bones sticking out in places that they shouldn't be...
Any other input on this topic? Opinions?
I'd just like to say this:
We all know clothes look best on stick figures, but that's not the normal female figure...
It's unfortunate that so many girls aspire to be part of the fashion industry, because really, if you're not born like that you won't make it...
There's no point starving yourself because you'll just end up looking like Tropicanaa and will never make it as a model looking like a leukemia patient...

I think that women are naturally shallow and catty, and they would be doing the same thing either way. Look at the corset. This device was created long before the media even had a chance to affect body image, yet women were willing to literally suffer in pain just to look skinny. It's how women are, and while the media wants us to think the media is responsible for this, it's just human nature.
I like girls that are thin, but not anorexic-thin. Anyway, that doesn't matter to me so much as personality does.

Do you feel that the Fashion industry/society/the media is effecting your body image?
No I could really care less about the fashion industry.
If so, Positive or negative effect?

Some of them seriously look disgusting when their hip bones poke out or when you can see their ribs. To me that's gross. I think women should have smooth curves, not rough bones :selfvomit

But we also have to take into account that they spend hours getting plucked and primped in hair and make up. And after that there's airbrushing. I'm sure if i had a hair and makeup team I'd look like a star every day but I don't. It seems to me like women always want to be the exact opposite of what they are. If a woman's not happy with her body, she'll strive to change it. Women don't do these things for men. They do it for themselves because we're competitive in nature and we always want to be the best. If being the best means the thinnest and the tallest there are going to be women who will strive for that.

Ladies:
Do you feel that the Fashion industry/society/the media is effecting your body image? To a certain extent yes it does. But I get over it.
If so, Positive or negative effect?
Sometimes positive sometimes negative.
Do you feel like models in magazines are too thin?
Some of them can be yes, often the 'normal' sized people they use are still a whole lot skinnier than your average.

Clothes nowadays are designed for tall skinny people even though most people aren't that. I think fashion should be accessible and it often isn't. It's annoying but I get over it and adapt clothes and trends to fit me better. That's all you can do really

The inventor of the corset was most probably a man. It was worn in order to impress men. It's not because women are shallow or catty, it's because of what society (which is usually male dominated) tells us we have to do in order to seem attractive to men and by and large it's what men are led to believe is attractive and therefore what they seek out in a partner. So don't blame just women because it's not just our fault. kthx

Actually I do believe that to an extent Brian is right. What about when a woman already has a husband? When she goes out she's doesn't need to get all dressed up and do all the make up and go all out because she already has a man. But she still does because she wants to look as good, or better than, her friends. She's also going to compete for attention from other people.
Women are definitely in competition with each other. I haven't met a woman who hasn't looked at another woman and said "I wish I had legs like her, I wish I had hair like hers" blah blah etc. I'm not saying that it's all women's fault because they're catty bitches but I am saying that women are in competition with each other when it comes to beauty and half the time it has nothing to do with men.
I think that because there's more women than men that there's an internal compulsion for women to need to stand out amongst each other.

Do you feel like women are pushing themselves to be thin, or is the media effecting their looks?
Generally speaking, most are not. The media is the most powerful influential force next to religion so... Yes! However most aren't proactive enough to make any dynamic changes in appearance/lifestyle - rather, they embrace the 'fashion' of claiming to be trying to lose weight/diet (the only reason I don't say 'no').
Do you like the "thin look?"
No, frankly. Now, I'm interpreting 'thin' in the context of 'trying too hard' - the visual appearance of such not only strikes me as 'generally unbecoming', but also as 'desperate' and 'nasty'.

The media glamorizes the Daisy-Duke look too much. Frankly, I prefer the look of Jacquelin Kennedy. ;)

Do you feel that the Fashion industry/society/the media is effecting your body image? no not at all.
If so, Positive or negative effect? n/a
Do you feel like models in magazines are too thin? some of 'em, yeah. i mean, personally, i don't get the fascination with skinny and/or thin women. i find womanly shapes (and i mean like scarlet jo for example) to be much hotter. i think women with that sort of body shape should be featured more. women with a nice bust and bum but a trim waist. that's what sells me. if i were to look @ a magazine ad and see some hot hourglass figure babe showcasing some purse or heels, i'd be like....FUCK, she's hot.....and the shoes are pretty okay too. /buys shoes
too bad that doesn't happen, seeing as most models in print are just figure-less.

i think it would be so great if you bitches would be a little bit more honest. i can bet any of you who have seen adriana lima in lingerie on a magazine cover have had SOME desire to resemble her, as opposed to being completely indifferent
Do you feel that the Fashion industry/society/the media is effecting your body image?
Seeing other women's bodies makes me more concious of my own, naturally. It's also in my nature to always be comparing and competing. This can be with a girl I know or a girl on a magazine cover. I always aspire to have the best body I can (in my opinion)
If so, Positive or negative effect?
I would say negative. I don't think it's so much the media or fashion industry that creates that effect though. It's my way of taking things. Everyone is different, I am simply more obsessive and comptetitive. The fashion industry simply presents me with an image of what's aesthetically pleasing (although this obviously varies from person to person) and I can choose to appreciate it and move on or to strive to look like that. I'm the kind of person that chooses the latter. This is negative for me because I've been sick many times because of this part of my personality. But AGAIN, it's ME, MY personality, NOT the fashion industry.
Do you feel like models in magazines are too thin?
I think some girls are very thin. I've really yet to define "too thin" for myself though, to be honest.
Any other input on this topic? Opinions?
Fat women who whine about the media pressuring them to be thin and making them depressed about their weight annoy the hell out of me. If you're unhappy with your weight for whatever reason, change it until you're happy. End of. Don't blame others for your shortcomings

Gents:
Do you feel like women are pushing themselves to be thin, or is the media effecting their looks?
Everyone's different, but in retrospect, I don't think it affects them all that much
Do you like the "thin look?"
Not particularly. I prefer a more sporty body type, but not like mannish
Any other input on this topic? Opinions?
I think that people read too much into body image. Everyone can look good if they want to, no matter your body type.

do you feel that the fashion industry/society/the media is effecting your body image? to a certain extent, of course. there's always a sort of compare/contrast list going on in my mind when i see a female that i wish to resemble. like karina said, it makes me more aware of my own body and my own physical flaws, which is a bummer, sure, but not totally terrible. i think it's good to know your flaws, that way you can try to fix them, or learn to accept them.
if so, positive or negative effect? neutral, i guess. it's not the fashion industry/society/medias fault for making me think about my own physical shortcomings. it's my mind that is in a constant limbo with what i am and what i want to be.
do you feel like models in magazines are too thin? honestly? no.

Do you feel that the Fashion industry/society/the media is effecting your body image? yes. people always assume it's only women who are affected, but nah.
If so, Positive or negative effect? positive and negative, i guess. it gives me something to strive for, and i feel good when i accomplish something. but then again, i should "love myself for what i look like no matter what blah blah blah"
Do you feel like models in magazines are too thin? nope. and it really frustrates me when people say that.
Do you feel like women are pushing themselves to be thin, or is the media effecting their looks? no, yes.
Do you like the "thin look?" yes.

Most things girls think they need to do to be pretty are enforced by girls more then men. Girls are shallow. Girls are the ones making the competition. Most guys wont say no to someone with curves or not the mainstream pretty.

Do you feel that the Fashion industry/society/the media is effecting your body image?
I'm not sure anymore. I used to look at women in magazines and think whoa they're so skinny. Now I look at them and think, well actually that one's fatter than that one, I wonder why that is. Recently I've gotten obsessed with weight but I don't know if it's about media or if it's just me. I think it does definitely affect women a lot though.
If so, Positive or negative effect?
Can work both ways. If someone is really overweight like clinically, seeing thinner people may help motivate them to lose weight which could save their life. Or if you're already skinny, it's negative because you might get skinnier.
Do you feel like models in magazines are too thin?
Not anymore.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being skinny. I'm 5'8 and weigh 10 stone 10, I've lost 6 pounds this week and I'm aiming to lose two stone and be around 9 stone ish. I can't wait til I have no boobs, they're a symbol of fatness :) it depends really, I think it's affected me in a good way because I'm too chubby.
