Dr. Strangelove FTW.

^ Yes.

Great director overall. An absolute visionary with some real great ideas.
Inconsistent body of work though, with a couple real stinkers and quite a bit of 'okay'.
A Clockwork Orange is one of the worst adaptations of all time.

A big fan! Love his movies, although there are some that arn't quite as good as they could have been. Still good though

Which ones did you think were "okay" and "real stinkers"?

Okay:
Full Metal Jacket
Killer's Kiss
Lolita

Stinkers:
A Clockwork Orange
Eyes Wide Shut (though, it did come close to okay)

And with his small body of work, that's quite a lot.
All of his good ones are absolutely great, and he's still on my list of favorite directors; I just don't think he had the most steady output)

That man had a wacky sense of the word "adaptation." Some good films though (i.e., Full Metal Jacket.)

I don't know how you can like Kubrick's other movies and not like A Clockwork Orange or Full Metal Jacket.

Tarkovsky's Solaris > 2001

Perhaps, I've not seen Solaris, but goddamn, 2001 is Kubrick's crowning achievement. If it's not mentioned, I don't care what else people say about the guy.

I thought Full Metal Jacket was okay.. It was just too much pointless grit without enough substance for me.

A Clockwork Orange went off on a total tangent and pissed all over the masterfully written source material with it's goofiness and absolutely unacceptable changes.

Allow me to honestly say that the only film that I've seen of his is the shining, since I'm still trying to find a few others, any recomendations?

Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
and
Spartacus

Two of the greatest movies ever made.

Which is not that different from how Stephen King felt about The Shining.

The Shining is a good movie, but a lousy adaptation. But so many shitty King adaptations have been done that it makes me think his stuff just can't be adapted well.

I consider the novel and the movie A Clockwork Orange as two different works, and thus judge them as such.

Maybe Kubrick took a few liberties with the film that he shouldn't have taken, sure. But as a piece of cinematic material, it's an absolute work of art.

And Dr. Strangelove is possibly the greatest movie of all time.

Now, that's how I feel about the Shining.
I think A Clockwork Orange is an entirely crappy movie with almost no redeemable qualities, even outside of the context of adaptation.

I think it would help if it was written well...

Not even Malcolm McDowell's performance? :O

You got me there. He did do a pretty great job.

I may have spoken too absolutely; there were a scene or two that I liked the direction of. The rehabilitation scene worked pretty much like it did in my head, which I quite liked. The iconic dancing about; while not fitting in with the adaptation too great, was really memorable.
It's the overall film that I find bothersome (and not even watchable, I really don't get why it's so celebrated); maybe it did have redeemable parts.

Wow, I Don't Understand how someone can say that A clockwork Orange is anything but a great film, a lousy adaptation absolutely but thats how Kubrick was. Kubrick changed every piece of work that he had ever worked on to fit HIS vision. Full Metal Jacket was great (gave me enough quotes for lifetime), 2001 was amazing, Dr. Strangelove was a masterpiece as well, and the Shining kept me glued to the screen.
Personally, I couldn't care less how King felt about the movie because its great, I understand how someone could be frustrated with someone else taking there body of work and changing it but you have to change books to fit into a movie, art can't be changed in forms without changes.

A Clockwork Orange is an awesome movie.
i have read the book, and i must say, i think the book tells the story better, but as someone has already saidd, i look at them as two completely didfferent things.
