I liked it, but I had to watch it more than twice to actually understand what was happening, and I still question what it is about a little bit.
Not my favorite, but a good movie none the less.

Why would anyone have to watch it more than once to understand it?
Are people that dumb?
Anyways, great movie - amazing acting and directing and good use of humor make this a great watch any time =)

It was an alright movie, interesting concept movie dragged on for me though. I liked the idea but just didn't like the movie. I don't know if it was the actors or what it just had me bored halfway through.

overrated. most people like it because its "weird" and "original" and "different".

Isn't that what makes a movie good?
This wasn't a typical love movie. It was more real.

definitely one of my favourites. i don't like it just because it was different though.. that's a stupid reason for liking something! i like it because it was visually stunning, creative, memorable, and it makes me feel things (good feelings by the end of it).

i put those quotation marks because i think the movie strives too hard to be all of those things. its unappealing.

The movie strives too hard to be "weird" and "original"? How did you come to this conclusion?
Is it the temporal disorder? Because lesser movies have used it more unnecessarily than this one. (Cue "Memento"). The temporal disorder isn't making up for lack of a good plot.
Is it the relationship? Joel and Clementine seem to be like a lot of couples that have been together for a long time. They argue over stupid little things and become bored and spiteful with one another. However, that doesn't mean that their relationship isn't loving. They're going through a rough patch when they break up, which happens in a lot of long-term relationships. If anything, their relationship, with all its flaws and nice moments, is more authentic of a relationship than anything I've seen in a movie before or since.
Is it the Mary/Doctor forgotten relationship sub-plot? Because I have to say that Mary and the Doctor was a near-perfect parallel to Joel and Clementine. The fact is that even though they could erase one or the other from their memory, they are still the same person attracted to the same kind of person. That can't be erased. This is also evidenced in the Patrick/Clementine relationship. Clementine is attracted to the things that Patrick does and says because they're things that Joel has done or said. But she it isn't Joel, so it isn't the same. Things feel off; it confuses her and messes her up. The way all of these work together... yeah. That just proves how well thought out and carefully constructed the script was.
Is it the concept of voluntary memory erasure to begin with? It isn't an idea that's been done to death or cliched, for sure. However, I don't see how this is pretentious, as I assume you're trying to imply by giving "weird" and "original" those ironic quotation marks.
By all means, disagree. I just want to know why you disagree.

Generally when people aren't expecting a non-linear storyline and get thrown into a film at the middle, only to be taken back to what must finally be the "beginning", it can throw them off.
But I'm sure you and your infinite wisdom on everything film-related managed to pick up on all of the subtleties and understood exactly what was being said by Gondry - in just one watch!
STFU, self-obssessed weiner.

STFU, self-obssessed weiner.I may get short with people; I'm not self obsessed - and I never said that it would be unusaul to have to watch multiple times to understand everything (any good story deserves multiple plays) - but the general movie, though maybe confusing at first (especially for noobs to the non-linear style); was extremely clear by the end.
I just don't understand how they couldn't get it.
You may be right that I should be more understanding; but I just don't get it.

If you were to watch a film whilst tired or drunk, you wouldn't take it all in, you wouldn't link many things together - there is no difference than watching a film whilst confused. It seems perfectly logical for people that didn't understand the beginning to not understand it for the entire film until they re-watch it, I just don't understand how you can't get that. Maybe you're just that dumb, or something.
