So I told all of my lovely friends in the YAY PIERCING THREAD. that I would make it's tattoo equivalent after I got my newest tatt.
So go ahead, share your tattoo pictures/stories/opinions/questions/plans and the like.
I'll be sharing some pictures of my own (as my body art is a constant work in progress) and love seeing pictures of other people's as well.
This is your official threa for in-depth tattoo discussion, so feel free to share!

Hehe, I love Marc Jacobs with his Spongebob tattoo (http://fabsugar.com/1553774).

It's tiny cos I was a bit nervous about getting one for the first time...
But this Summer when I start working full time I shall be getting a set of three stars on my shoulder, my foot, and then a cascade of stars along my lower back to one side...

i have plans for the near future starting in september
most of them will be really simple, black & gray.
a thin-lined peace sign on my pinky knuckle for "in the midst of the noise and chaos, keep the stillness inside of you"
"thy will be done" on either my wrist or base of neck
"freedom" on my inner upper arm
a willow tree on my shoulder. i want this to be the largest and most indepth of my tattoos.
i would love a full arm sleeve, but that won't be for years.

^ that design looks a bit stampy. =\ if you do get something like that make sure it flows with your body and doesn't look like it was just slapped on.
talk to your tattoo artist about designing it, adding more elements to it, things like that. it's pretty but doesn't really stand out to me - maybe its just because of that photo. XD

Redundant as this is..
#1: My first tattoo... black widow.. because I like their mating ritual. =] Just off the tattoo parlour's pinned up designs because I was young and too stupid to realise that drawing it yourself is better. Still, I like it.
#2: I drew this one! The pic's a bit blurry, it's much nicer IRL. I love it.
I would like to get an intricate spiderweb across one side, over half my ribcage, going up towards my breasts and down my hip, with script in the web bit.. but I don't know what script yet.
I also want Hindi script next to my navel stretching out to the side.

Sofi, you're only 15, getting a tattoo is a big decision to make, it will stay on you like a birth mark, and if you do decide to have it taken off it leaves your skin nasty looking.
If you do get it, you'll love it at first, show it off, then the novelty wears out and you'll probably want something else....

also, you're far too young.
dichotomy
05-21-2008, 02:31 PM

05-21-2008, 03:09 PM
If you don't know what you want... don't get one. Honestly, and seriously, do not...
Many tattoo artists have a policy for people who aren't sure what they want... or come in and just pick some flash image "off the wall" and will tell them after they've picked something to wait two weeks, and come back if they're still SURE they want it.
A tattoo is a permanent commitment, and if you're getting one under the assumption that you can always have it removed later if you don't like it.... you shouldn't be getting one to begin with.
Wait a few years, take your time to really think about it and decide on something that is uniquely you. If you pick something, wait a year, see if you still like it... and then go for it. I'd advise waiting until you're 18, simply because your tastes and personality change so much during your teen years.

I want a shooting star shaped around my ankle....but if i found the back of my neck hurt like shit what do you think the ankle will be like for me?
Different people, different pain tolerances, etc. Most people claim that the closer to the bone you get, the more it hurts. To be honest, I don't find tattoos to be painful at all, yet the ones on softer (flabbier) parts of the body irritate the heck out of me. Feeling the muscle/fat jiggle drives me nuts, it's like a vibrating tickling feeling and I have to fight not to laugh and squirm.... as I HATE being tickled  I don't think anyone can accurately describe to you how a tattoo will feel in any specific spot, as everyone has different personal tolerances, opinions, etc. If you want the tattoo bad enough, really forever for the rest of your life, then potential pain shouldn't be something you take into consideration- it should just be "worth it".
Also note that if it's a small, simple tattoo, it'll be over relatively quick. If it's a larger more detailed tattoo, then you can always take a break when the pain (or in my case, tickling) becomes too much. You can resume in a few minutes, a few hours, or even a few days... just talk to your artist and tell them your concerns.
I want a tattoo - have wanted one for years - and am getting more and more tempted to get it - but cannot decide where - i want it to be visible (i dont show a lot of skin!) and have decided that i'd like it on my wrist, but cant decide whether i want it on the outside or the inside - i'm slightly concerned for the safety of my wrist veins!

As long as you go to a proper artist in a professional studio, your veins will be perfectly safe. The needles only penetrate the very top of the epidermis, no where near deep enough to spout blood from your veins, in fact, a cat scratch is much more likely to cause damage than a professionally done tattoo. That said, don't limit your options on where you place it, it's safe... and a very cute idea. It'd be hard to regret the memory of a beloved pet.
What are people's thoughts on white ink tattoos?
Overall, or specific white-ink masterpieces?

Haha, I know a tattoo artist who made a deal with his parents (when he was a younger teen) that he would cut his dreads off if he could get a tattoo. Well, the good news is that he's a very talented artist... and now has many badass tattoos to make up for an early mistake...of tribal proportions...haha.
In my state, you must be 18 to get a tattoo, parental consent for minors is not accepted, and I think that's completely respectable.
bliss, you have a sweet tattoo, I'm actually a little jealous.

Why would you want a gate on your back?

Why would you want a gate on your back?
Besides the fact that you missed the term "first installment"... the gates are symbollic of so...so many things to me. All of my tattoos have philosophical and religious significance. The gates originally formulated from my greatest philosophy on life, Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death", as I would sooner die than live a life that is not truly free. In fact, my first tattoo was the word "Liberty"...to which I plan to later add "or Death". The gargoyles are historically symbolic of protection, in this case guarding the gates, and what will soon be behind them. Originally, I was going to make them gates to Valhalla, the resting place of those who have died valliantly in battle, though now they will be gates to a medeival looking castle...which has further significance of it's own tied into my ancestry as well as my own personal history.
Would you have suggested a butterfly, or perhaps stars?

Overall, or specific white-ink masterpieces?
Just overall. I've heard some people say they really like them, but others find them kind of "pointless". I dunno, I think they're kind of neat. As far as I know, they're a relatively recent trend?
I also think black light tattoos seem pretty cool.

Eh, not that recent...
I think white-ink is kind of... pleasantly surprising if it's a well done tattoo. You get a closer look at someone you look at every day and...holy shit that's incredible!
I think Blacklight is just tacky alot of the time (mainly because most of the people i know who have them are just ravers...) but it can be cool. I know a guy who has his entire face done up like a skull.
Now that's badass.

^ the chinese symbol for family is 'jia', but it also means home/house. be really careful with the kanji tattoos and make sure you double check it with someone who is actually chinese so they can tell you the "true" meaning - some things may literally translate into what you want but won't relay the message you want. like that tattoo some chick got that supposedly said "forever in my memory" and it actually mean "don't forget", as in a low importance thing you'd write on a post it note.
i have completely lost track of this thread. two things i want to bring up if they haven't already been discussed [i'll troll through the whole thing soon]
couple/matching tattoos - do you believe in the curse?
and
UV tattoos. experiences, knowledge, whats the deal. i'm looking into one but not 100% on it yet.

I totally agree with the warning on kanji characters... I know a girl who has one on her ankle, and told me it means "family"... yet the chinese exchange student our senior year told her it meant "barn" or something of that nature, haha.
My husband and I are getting intertwining half-sleeves sometime in the next year. Each will, however, look like a perfectly complete tattoo all on it's own (not just half a tattoo, I think those look pretty retarded, especially for people who end up breaking up/divorced) and they will form the word "Wyrd" (a word of fate) when we hold hands. I love my husband dearly, but never in my life would I get his name tattooed on my body, as THAT i think is truly a curse, same with the tattoos that look incomplete without eachother (like half a word, half a heart, half an easily identifiable object, etc.)
I personally think tattoos that are just highlighted or accented with UV ink look pretty cool.

It seems okay, and most are pretty good. Nothing amazingly ground-breaking though, and there are still a few duff ones. I'm not looking for anything realistic or terribly compliacted though, just good quality as its going to be rather visible.
This is by far the most recommended place around me, but was wondering if it was worth going to a city or something? No that I know any places there either, and the closest is Bristol or Cardiff. ^^
I despise the boyfriends artist, so thats out of the question, as hes a total arse and I'm not even convinced he can draw....

I'd say do a search on a tattoo artist site for artists in your area/nearby cities... and then go with the best one you can find. Don't just settle for the studio everyone else seems to be going to, as that's no indication that it's genuinely good. The artists there, as you have already mentioned, are nothing spectacular, but are by no means bad artists. Daryll, I think his name was, seems to have the best portfolio (from what is viewable on the site) however, which artist is right for you is also dependant on what you want, so ask the studio's advice, and use your own judgement as well if you choose to go there.
Had a few more hours on my back today... it's a castle alright! Post pictures tomorrow...

before i got my tattoo done. i went to 3 different studios, talked to 5 different artists, looked through each artist's portfolios. got drawings from 3 of them, and estimates from all 5. I picked one artist who was suggested to me by my best friend. The studio is 45 minutes away. i went and got the tattoo done. I was amazed on the final results, the artist was professional and an all around great guy, i go in the shop everytime i am in town to talk, he remembers my name and tattoo, now i have an artist for aslong as i will need one.
do some research, drive around and get to know a few artists. look at their work and decide which artist you like most, which artist's work matched the style of your tattoo.. then get the ink done.

I absolutely LOVE behind-the-ear ink.. I have a butterfly behind my left!
Just please, don't get it on both sides.. It'll be too much like racing stripes on a car!
I'd say the "G" sounds more significant.. Besides who wants to hear "Oh, my last name is pronounced like apple core!" Definitely not the greatest story ever told. =P

There used to be a thread on this months ago when I was last here on my old account but I thought I'd revive the topic.
So yeah what tattoos (if any) do you already have? What tattoo would you want if you were to get one and are you planning a new tattoo soon?
So far I have two:
This one I got Feb 9th 2007 (http://a615.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/12/l_851082f7f5958565ef23569d67aeda1e.jpg)
This one I got June 4th 2008 (http://a816.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/122/l_80b4e50b042fca659f222fc16206eb07.jpg)
I want a few more though:
*I was born on the cusp between leo and virgo and I found a great design that mixes the two symbols together. I want this on my other wrist or ankle.
*I love music, after Aerosmith my favourite band are the Foo Fighters. Seeing as I already have my Aero wings covered I quite like the idea of getting the Foos 'FF' symbol on my neck like the 'There is nothing left to lose' album.
*A artist friend of mine is designing an armband tattoo for me. Vines entwined with one another with holly berries and leaves (my name is Hollie).
*Kanji symbols for Love, Truth and Loyalty
Keep in mind I won't be getting ALL of these but some are a possibility. Tattoos are just an interest of mine so save the bitching about how horrible they are and the like. I like them, I like the ones I've got, at the end of the day my opinion of my tattoos is the one that counts.
So yeah, share your own tattoo story...

So, I made an appointment 2 weeks from now at a tattoo place my friend recommended. Along with getting my existing tattoo touched up, I'm looking into getting a small apple behind my ear. I'm really into the idea- Besides being a symbol of life the apple stands for new beginnings: It is what caused destruction in the garden of Eden, and inspired Isaac Newton's life's work.
So, I was brainstorming ideas for the appearance of the apple online, and all I can find are crazies who got the Mac logo inked on themselves.. So I'm putting this out there to you guys: What opinions do you have?
Should I get a view of a half-apple[so you can see the inside] or just of the outside layer?
Should I get it in color[In this case it would be a red apple, not green] or stay with black and white?
I was thinking of getting the Gemini symbol http://www.cafeastrology.com/images/geminisymbol.jpg somehow meshed with the apple, so it would almost look like the apple's core. I found something sort of similar here:
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://bp1.blogger.com/_r7s_h2SkU_o/RhaEbj4_lDI/AAAAAAAAAAM/XqQ0ghKoARs/s320/apple%2Btattoo%2B2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://middleschoolmathteach.blogspot.com/2007/04/spring-break.html&h=240&w=320&sz=22&hl=en&start=16&um=1&tbnid=A_lL84U4K4_nvM:&tbnh=89&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dapple%2Btattoo%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26c lient%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den-us%26sa%3DN(APPLE PIE! HA!)
Although it's not exactly what I had in mind, the Gemini symbol would be incorporated into the apple itself, with the bottom and top bar being part of the apple's outline.
So, with ALL that siad, and suggestions Ideas? Criticisms? Thanks, all!

So basically, I've been obsessed with dragonflys and the meaning of them for about 10 years and now that I'm almost 18 I can't think of anything better for a first tattoo. So I've looked around and found this one. (See picture) I want to placed a little above my shoulder blades/on my lower neck. so my question is, how much do you think this will cost?
rockerchick218

That picture is pretty basic. You'd probably like it better if you had more detail put into it.
The price for tattoos varies from shop to shop. It also depends on how big you want it and how detailed you're going to go.
I'd say you're looking at anywhere from $50-75.

plus you should be calling tattoo shops and asking how they would price it
usually a more expensive tattoo is better than a cheaper one
Kat_over-rated

Depends on where you get it.
Generally there's a set price for any tattoo (ranging from $40-$80) and then an hourly rate.
Usually the more expensive ones are better, if it costs less than $40 chances are you shouldn't get it.

Well, It all depends on the shop,
At my shop we charge $100-$200 dollars for full back peices, and sleeves.
and $20-$100 for anything else.
But, it really all depends on how big it is, how many sessions it'll take to complete...
Then every different artist had different prices, Because most artists are indivually employed, and usually there is a price RANGE set, for the whole shop, but each artist charges different... within the range.
I'd really advise you check with the shop you plan on getting it done at, Because truthfully, It varies from every single shop.
I'm guessing that for a hip peice it'll be roughly $35-$60, But, that's based on if it were MY shop, and if I were doing it.

I personally don't like it.
However you shouldn't care what other people think, it's your tattoo, your the one who has to live with it so make sure it's something you want and not what other people want.
The same for the location it's really up to you. Just remember when you're picking a spot try to pick somewhere that you can cover up if you need to and somewhere that isn't going to stretch when you get older and gain weight/get pregnant. I also suggest avoiding your ribs because that hurts like hell.

If you get it done at a good place they usually have free touch ups for life. If you are talking about asking them to draw it first so you can see what it looks like? Most of them use a stencil anyway.
delia6
07-15-2008, 11:14 PM
but the thing is, i plan on bringing in a picture of what i would like. so i'm not really sure if they'd definitely be able to copy it exactly. and being that its an ambigram, precision is key.

I've never had a tattoo cost less than 80 dollars (tip not included). Different studios have different rates, hourly rates usually, 80-120 an hour is pretty normal. Just remember, you get what you pay for. Reputable studios tend to charge more not only for the quality and detail of the work, but also for the extensive costs of properly sanitizing their equipment and keeping in proper licensing/codes. You don't shop around for price when it comes to tattoos (unless you're in love with the idea of Hep B or something) you shop around for quality, and safety.
Kalashnikov
07-16-2008, 01:08 AM
Asking to see it drawn up before hand is perfectly acceptable and I encourage it. IT is art afterall and what one artist does may not be what you're looking for. Some shops require a deposit on drawing something up incase you don't go with them, to cover the artist's time from drawing it up. But they're almost always very accomodating and able to tell you what will and will not work. Good art doesn't neccesarily mean good tattoos.
As for touch ups my first is about 3 years old and doesn't need one yet, though all my ink is black and takes much less time to fade. At least the first touch up is free everywhere I \'ve gone.

Here they'd be like $60 minimum. You have to pay for new needles and everything for each client, regardless of the size.
But meh, I guess thats America. Land of the sales for us at the moment.
I totally agree with the tattooing names thing. Unless its a kid or something, its not really something you want to take a chance with. Especially when you're a teen or so young anyway. I can cope with symbols perhaps, but names are a no-no for me. My local tattoo shop refused to do them, so many cover-ups...

Care to explain any of them?
Sure. The one in Greek means "Come and get them". Its a gun thing. RKBA means Right to Keep and Bear Arms. The revolvers is a club sanctioned tattoo for someone who is a proven gunslinger. The spade/skull is the Four Horsemen M.C. tattoo. The bullets with 'we shall overcome' written on them is a reminder to all who would stand in the way of freedom. Freedom and Fighter are pretty self-explaining. And the rose-shamrock-1911 is a tribute to my wife's heritage (as a rose is typically associated with hispanic culture) and since I'm Irish, it went well together. The gun in between just looks good.

No, the bullet rotates inside the gun barrel. I assume you mean it is unstable in organic tissue. The newer ones are, the old Russian bullets from before Vietnam aren't. And you can still buy/build them cheap. I'm building my 3rd for under $300.

How did this turn into a discussion about weapons??
Anyways,
I have my boyfriends initials [which just so happen to be my initials too, so dont flame] on my left wrist, In just normal letters... He has the same thing too, same place, etc. Kinda has a double meaning.
We both did those on our own, with an inkpen and a needle, Again, dont flame me, It's healed, it's over, and i'm still breathing...
Then i have a little peace sign, & a heart, on my wrist, Again, Home-done.
But, Even though i work in a tattoo shop, legally i can't get any done until i'm of-age, Otherwise my mother could sue the pants off of them... Yeah, She'd do it too.
Although, I'm thinking of taking a little time when no one is looking to fix my initials tattoo. It wasn't deep enough and now it's quite faded and ish looking.
--But, I do want a portrait tattoo done of my grandfather, with the words "Key-Ya-Key!" [it had something to do with Lassie, and.. i dunno, when he wanted me, he'd yell it, and i'd come]
But, with that one, I want a bit of his ashes mixed into the ink, Call me crazy, but when you love someone that much...
--Then i want LTFC and ESUK - LETS and FUCK on intertwined fingers or VITA and MORS - Vita (life) Mors (death) in Latin.
There's more, but i'll edit when i have more time,

I'm still debating whether I want it stone-toned like my husbands, or made to look more like a piece of jewelry...

I have a four-leaf clover on my right hip. Really small. It cost $70.

I wanna get another one. I'm thinking about a phoenix. With this design..

But I really like the colors on this one.

I would not have paid 70 dollars for that.
Actually, I wouldn't have paid for that at all... it's cover-up worthy.

It's meaningful to me. My best friend and I got matching ones. Four leaf clover/two infinity signs. Infinity=Forever. So, I don't really care what you think. I love it. :)

Regarding: People who say: ONLY GET A TATTOO IF IT MEANS SOMETHING BCUZ U'LL HAVE IT FOR LIFE!
You're missing something really obvious and glaring here: You could regret a tattoo that means something too. No matter what it is, your feelings regarding something that's meaningful can change. And they do, very often.
Getting tattoos that look cool is also a valid choice if you put just as much thought into it. Just because your tattoo doesn't have some deep symbolism about it doesn't instantly mean that you're going to regret it later in life, in fact, it's even possible that it's LESS likely you're going to regret it later in life, rather than just lose enthusiasm about it.
I just don't understand why so many people say this stuff. It's madness.

Because I'm really lame and love Harry Potter I'm getting this (http://www.beyondhogwarts.com/articles/images/septologysymbol-anim.gif?clicks=1) somewhere on my body.
And I'm designing something at the moment which is a bit of a play on the idea of a skeleton key. I'll have to scan it up at some point.
I also plan to get my zodiac symbol (cancer).
Anddddd I want the mouth type thing (including the yellow bits) from this (http://www.media.wmg-is.com/media/portal/media/cms/images/200609/billy-talent-ii--cover-art-extralarge_1159265062642.jpg) album cover. But I think I need to be very sure of the artist doing it.

I was going to say "instead of getting a tattoo of toki just get a tattoo of a regular whale, since there'll likely be more whales who you feel empathy for" but Jesus Christ it's a whale. I don't think anybody, including you, will be able to tell if it's a tattoo of whale A or whale B.
I'd get a tattoo of Toki because it'd probably make you feel better right now and even if you start to care for another whale more, you probably wouldn't ever regret it. And if you did regret it you could just start telling people it's just of a whale (in general)

why would i regret it? actually you can tell whales apart. each one looks diff. just like people. ive learned to identify certain whales already, just by looking at them i know their names. LOL and actually it isnt that hard.
