I just moved into my first apartment.
It was amazing.
Here are the websites/stores I got things from:
http://www.greenergrassdesign.com/
www.urbanoutfitters.com
www.target.com
http://dutchbydesign.com/
http://sprouthome.stores.yahoo.net/
http://www.pbteen.com/

And I focused on colors for each room, not themes. Yellow, green, white for living room. Teal and brown for kitchen. Black and white for bathroom, etc.

Decorate the room in either one theme or some colors you like.
My room is done in purple and green.
Two walls painted a light purple and the other two a light-ish green.
I also have purple bedding and curtains and green pieces like posters, a clock, and candle holders.
However, my cousin has her room done in an Asian theme.
It's really cool. Her walls are red and trimmed in black.
Her bed sheets are white with a black comforter and the headboard is black also.
She has different colored paper laterns in her room and fake bambo and a fake cherry blossom tree also.
She also has a lot of candles in the room. The candles are all red, black, and white.
And in the corner of the room she has a black and white screen.

I love greener grass. I get half of my dorm furniture from there. The furniture matches basically every color pallet too. The container store is wicked good too.

Buying/making wall art is a great way to change the look of a room.
A small bookcase also helps you organize, and is very cute!
A dish chair can be found in almost any color.. they are super comfy!
Changing your bedding and/or curtains can really change the overall look of a room.
Adding cute little touches, like a small plant, cute hooks on the wall to hang coats/purses etc. or a pot of scented oil can make the place look more artful.
Good luck!

Use wallpaper, or paint with designs on it.

i love my room.
it used to be pink and green stripes. ( i was in like 6th grade when I picked it out..)
but last year i became obsessed with a reddish color, not bright red, but not maroon.. in between.
we painted half the room a color called "cherry divine" and the top half pale pink.
border in between is black with green, pale pink, and reddish colored flowers (iris) and it's really elegant looking.
all my furniture is black, bedding is the wall colors, and there's little things that match.
i also have tons of pictures and stuff that mean a lot to me.
you should decorate your room to suit your personality.
