Something I don't get: how come short/buzzcut hair is called "low maintenance"? The shorter you want to keep it the more often you have to get it cut, surely the lowest maintenance is to go all Sikh and just leave everything to grow?

I think it refers to the daily thing of just getting up, washing it and shoving your head out the window to dry it. In the long term though I can imagine it'll be a pain in the ass

Yup.
They just mean you don't have to bother styling it since it doesn't change or anything.

i think it also mean about washing it. its much less pain in ass to wash buzz short hair then half back long hair.

The trimming is a pain but it does have other benefits.
1. shorter hair tangles less; so less time brushing
2. shorter hair can be washed much faster in the shower
3. little to no styling needed (depends though because some short hairstyles still require a lot of styling time)

I suppose it depends which you prefer.
