View Full Version : Interesting Historical Film?

Ok, I need some suggestions. I need to find a film that is about history (pretty much anything in history) that is factually accurate but yet interesting for a group of 12-13 year old boys to watch. Now, I watch many historical films myself, but sadly nothing that I find interesting would appeal to this demographic, I think. Nothing documentary, obviously, it can be various formats- like cartoon is ok- , should be accurate (so nothing like 300 or something please), interesting, and has to be a decent rating (PG-13 at the most, nothing R). Oh, and since I need it by Thursday, preferably something common that I can find at a video store. Any help would be much appreciated! :)

i couldn't think of any PG-13 rated ones off the top of my head, but i made a search and came up with a good site you might want to look at :)

Staturn: Rated R for graphic violence and language. :(

It's for a world history class I teach after school, so I can't very well show these kids an R rated film without potentially getting in trouble with the institute or the institute getting in trouble with the parents. Thus the need for PG, PG-13 at the most.

Thank you soooo much. This is perfect.
Now I just need to find one that I've seen or that looks interesting. :)

Yeah, unfortunately they are a bit graphic. It really sucks, because most interesting historical films tend to be about war, which then equates to graphic violence, which equates to an R rating. Goddamn it. Thankfully, I found this site that lists like every historical movie ever. And I've found some things that seem somewhat promising, so now I'm going to imdb them.

gandhi owns, but they'll probably find it boring so.... the aviator? bridge too far? the longest day? gettysburg? all of them are pretty long though.

I love Gandhi, but it's too long and they'd probably get bored. I haven't seen any of those, but I'll look into them. Thanks. :)

Gallipoli. Great film and doesn't have any swearing and very little violence.

A Bridge too Far and the Longest Day are way too long for stupid lil' kids.

Gallipoli is too complex for their silly little minds.

I don't have any recommendations though.

^oh yes, 13 days is amazing.

i don't suppose a bunch of 13 year old's would be interested in tora tora tora would they?

uh, let's see...men of honor is amazing...i think that would be appealing to the age group.

all the president's men rocks, but the appeal to that age group would be a little iffy, the story line is...well, slow to start.

ohohoh! the shattered glass is really good...holds interest too. it's a film about journalism mainly, but it is a historical event.

and you know, depending on what you're aloud to show, you could always just go for the live film documentaries for any film really...kids love that gorry stuff.

that's all i can think of right now.

Thirteen Days? I don't know if they can sit through a movie which is mostly dialog, and pretty complex dialog for them.

The accents will keep 'em going, you know that, Stav.

Plus, they're talking about the nuclear holocaust. Even pre-teens can appreciate that.

Is that the French produced one?

I would suggest Ben Hur. But it's a little old, I'm not sure video stores would have it nor it be suitable for 12/13 year olds. :slash:

That's not really a historical movie though, it's just a movie that take place in a historical time.

Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0821638/

not rated due to the fact that it was an HBO movie, but it's on DVD and very easy to find, however i think in argentina it was rated the equivilent of pg13

also i dont know if it's been stated, but if you're in for the hawl, Band of Brothers is one of the most brilliant and accurate depictions of the american soldier during world war 2 in europe ever.

another Native American themed movie i couldn't recommend more is The New World, despite the presence of Collin Ferrel, this is a visceral and beautiful film to watch, and not to mention, one of the most historically accurate films on the subject ever mde, and if these are young kids who saw the Disney version of Pocahantis, they can see the real story here.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402399/ also rated pg-13.

I think Band of Brothers might just be a bit too violent for 12 year olds.

Then again, if they're 12 year old guys...who knows.

Schindler's List? Sorry Laura bit late on the response.
Probably doesn't meet the rating though; and the majority is in black and white. So many young teenagers are like "Argh black and white!" *Zones out*
