You don't have to do your own whole system. But I'm looking for any thoughts that you would have to change it or how it should be done.

For instance, in This Film Is Not Yet Rated, Michael Tucker talks about how gory violence is rated as R but violence without consequence is rated PG-13 and how he thinks if anything, it should be switched, because the PG-13 gives an unrealistic view of violence.

I honestly think that the rating system in general is fairly pointless. Give people a good idea of what's in the film - good idea for sensitive souls. Leave the rest down to parents and what they're comfortable with their kids watching, and eventually when their taste expands on its own, what they want to watch.

It's not like there's only one way to see a movie. If they can't legally see it, that's at least $5 gone and he's got a copy off some guy he knows.

Oh, but it's all just getting stupid.

For instance, in my second year of college 7 members of our group had to constantly get permission slips signed to watch films that were an 18. It was a film studies group. Of course everyone is going to be consenting, and they were all 17 going on 18 anyway.

And then you could also argue that censorship is slowly getting more lax again. When you compare the ultimate film taboo of penetrative sex, there wasn't really any from Deepthroat onwards until 2004, with Michael Winterbottom's 9 Songs. An awful film, but there is ejaculation, penetrative intercourse, fellatio, the works. If that is released and actually distributed as a non-pornographic film, how long will it be before you can see tits in a pg-13?

^ Well, I don't know as much about how it works where you are, but sometimes here, tits can be pg13.
With ours, there are no steady guidelines, and each movie is completely up to the discretion of the ones that rate it.

anyway, it's really hard to rate
it really depends on how sensitive and mature the individual is
as long as they go in realising its a film
and come out remembering it was a film
