Am I the only one who thinks so? Most prom dresses I see make me want to vomit.
I'm not anti-prom though, I'm most definately going this year, but I refuse to buy an actual prom dress. Most of them are hideous!

Examples?

I know what you mean. Most of them make me feel like a hooker or a mermaid.
I found some places that sell decent looking ones.

I wouldnt wear any of the pics you posted, but I do like them :S

You dont have to get a ''Prom'' Dress you can just get A dress.

At my school Prom (the one i never went to, buh i saw pics) some girls, in fact the majority of the girls bought cute dresses from high street retailers. Theirs a wide selection of colours, patterns, style and fabrics out there. They dont all make you like mermaids and puffins

Yeah, I will definately be looking for dresses in bridal shops/vintage stores or any basic formalwear shop. I just won't go near those awful department store prom sections :(

Prom doesn't have to be tacky...this is what me and my friends wore and most dresses were of similar styles at prom. I think it's usually smaller towns with corny proms that promote "the prom dress".

Ugly=/= Tacky.

They're not typical "prom" dresses, they're labeled cocktail dresses.

PS: Two of the dresses are made with Swarovski crystals, not rhine stones.

BTW, plain backless gowns are really classy and work with anything.

I'm quite aware of that they are. And I'm quite aware ugly and tacky are two different things. Even though the second one had a good little combo of both. It's just I thought it was sort of, funny(?) the thread starter was talking about hideous dresses then you posted those, whether they're 'tacky' or not. No neeeed to get defensive, I mean no harm, rofl. (It kinda seemed you had an attitude to the post, it's hard to tell on message boards though. :o)

ANYWAY THOUGH. Yes. Threadstarter, go for a cocktail dress. Don't go short short though with whatever kind of dress you get it, it usually ends up looking a little trashy.

I liked all of those dresses you posted, expect for the last one.
I don't think prom dresses are tacky at all if you know what you are looking for.
I got my prom dress from a bridal shop that sold prom dresses also.

I thought she was talking about hideous tacky prom dresses, that is dresses specifically designed for prom. Whether someone considers something ugly or not is subjective, there are no "ugly" "hideous" "gorgeous" etc titles in dresses, just "prom", "cocktail", "formal", etc.

I also have no idea which dress you refer to when you say "the second one", do you mean from left to right, or right to left?

I don't have an attitude to the post, I've just lately been overusing the =/= .

Well unless I've started counting backwards I mean the one from left to right. ;]

It's funny because price ranging on those dresses also goes from more costly to less costly in that direction- me being a cheap brat.

Honestly I think yours is the best. It's rather simple and chic. And funnily enough, the more expensive ones are the ones I find to be terrible. ;]

The simpler the better. My homecoming dress was prettier, and it was just one solid black color. I just couldn't wear it twice. This one felt a bit overbearing for me actually.

Yeah, I agree.
The last one was the perttiest.
Then the one next to it.
The blue one was just ugly.

I'm anti-prom... so I can agree to it's cheesiness. I refused to attend any...except once as a date to my younger guy friend who was having some trouble getting a date...

my grandmother made my prom dress for me. it was one of those 40's style lounge singer dresses...like the kind that roger rabbit's wife wore. and my girlfriend wore a zute suit.

it was very unique and classy.

maybe you could have a custome job done? that way you could have anything you want!

:sadshake:

Proms are sad. No, scratch that, the people who treat it like the most important and extravagant day of their entire lives are sad. If I ever have to go to any function like that again, I'm going in jeans, just to spite everyone.

That's what I told my friend when she bought a wedding dress for her senior prom. :twitch:

What I hate most about prom dresses is that they usally come in the most awful colors. Like bright pinks, oranges, lime green, pastel pinks and purples. It's just not appealing. Whatever happened to the classic whites, blacks and reds?

And anything with beading or rhinestones should be BURNED.

I looked smashing. Classic black tux, bow tie, white shirt. My date looked elegant too. Just a nice looking black dress, no huge fluffy pastel crap.

I like the fluffy gowns.
I call them "Princess dresses".
I just don't like people who wear white and black to prom.
I see white as a wedding color and black as a funeral color.
