Chapter 2
Kegan could not sleep the rest of the night after that dream. He did not know why that dream scared him so much. Maybe it was the fact the voice was so inhuman sounding. Maybe it was the fact that the dream felt so real he could feel the cold chill of the fog even walking around his school and going to class some time later. When he got into JROTC that later that day he had almost shaken the fear and feelings associated with that dream. He noticed that when he walked into the room that day the red head that he noticed the day before sat up and looked at him weird. She stared at him so hard that her hazel eyes seemed to pierce into his soul and beyond. Suddenly she caught herself staring and looked back down at her paper and began what Kegan could only assume was drawing again. He sat down in the corner of the room two seats back and one seat to the left of her. He noticed that she had a stack of a comic book series that he had recently been reading. He decided to see what kind of girl she really was. She seemed nice but he hoped he wasn’t wrong in trying to approach her. He walked up and picked up the book and thumbed through it and quivered on the inside as he said “This is a good series of books, you like them too?” She stopped drawing the dragon on the page and looked up like she wasn’t surprised at all that he was talking to her. “Yeah, I like it a lot. I’ve got more of them at my house too. Have you seen the anime of it too?” “Yeah I have, that’s actually where I heard of it,” he replied,” My names Kegan, nice to meet you.” She let out a small chuckle and said, “I’m sorry I forgot about introductions entirely, my names Shannon.” The Colonel stood up at the front of the class and told everyone to take their seats. Kegan quickly went back to his seat and sat back down. For some reason he found her an irresistible canadite for a girlfriend, especially since he hadn’t had one in some time. He quietly sat and stared at her as he mulled over the thought of asking her out. He still felt like he had known her his entire life even though he hadn’t seen her until the day before. Maybe the reason would become more apparent with time.

That night Kegan decided to go for a walk around his neighborhood. Even thought it was one of the shoddier looking places in the city since the homes had been built in the 70s it still was far from being unsafe. As he walked around he felt a bit of anxiousness building in him. He had already walked a block from his house and it was getting dark, so he decided to turn around and walk home. As he walked he thought he heard something clicking behind him, much like claws on the hard surface, so he stopped and turned around figuring the sound he heard was maybe a lost dog walking behind him. He didn’t see anything so he continued walking. As he walked he heard the sound again, and again he stopped and looked behind him but with no results on what was making the sound. This time however when he turned around and started walking he heard a growl. He decided to move a bit faster this time when he continued back towards his house. The clicking got quicker also, so he sped up his pace. Before Kegan knew it he was running in a dead sprint and the clicking was the same gait as that of a running wolf. “I’m done for,” Kegan thought to himself as he continued running,” I thought that I had been playing too many video games at first but know I know this is real, and there is no way to get away from it either.” he was coming up on the end of his street but he was getting winded and the clicking wasn’t a dark, playful run of a wolf playing with its prey, it was now more of a creature moving in for the kill. As he ran he stumbled and fell, but nine years of martial arts had taught him how to fall without hurting himself so as he fell he turned so his back would absorb the blunt of the impact instead of his face. When he hit the ground he swore he heard the triumphant yelp of a wolf going for the kill, but as he heard this he lashed out with both feet and caught something very invisible but very solid and sent it back from the direction it came from. As soon as he recovered fro the kick, he got up and started sprinting for his house. He moved faster than he could ever remember and he didn’t feel as winded as he did a few seconds ago. The clicking was back and seemed to be having trouble keeping up with him this time. He reached his house a few seconds later and scrambled in the door and shut it, as the long drawn out cry of a wolf that had lost its prey echoed through the cool crisp dusk outside, sending the icy chill of fear through his veins.

That night Kegan dreamed that he was walking down the middle of a street, the buildings around him ruined and burning, and the cries of dying people all around him. As he walked further he realized that this was the same street that he ran from the clicking in that same evening. As he walked he came upon a figure standing in the middle of the road, and when he got closer he could see the glistening of hair like copper in the light form the burning buildings around him. All you see before you will come to pass if you do not seize your destiny and choose to change that which has been wrongly painted into the flow of fate, Keeper. He recognized that voice and walked up quickly to face the young girl standing before him, clad in a simple linen robe. “Be wary, “she continued” as your enemies can be your friends and sometime your friends could be the threat to us all.” “What do you mean Shannon?” Kegan asked franticly looking around for some other person other than the cryptic sounding girl,” What happened here?” There is a great evil descending on this realm and only the Guardians can He inexplicitly moved his right hand to his hip where he found a large dagger belted to his waist. He drew it even though he had never seen this blade in his life. He glanced down at it, examining it in the flickering light. It was a long slender blade that seemed to pulse with life like it had its own feelings and emotions. The hilt had a large cross piece and looked like it had the helm of some warlord on it. When he looked back up to see if Shannon had anything else to say, Shannon was no longer there but instead there was a large wolf there pacing and growling at him. Kegan however knew that this was no ordinary hound as he could see its muscles rippling under some sort of clear membrane. The creature was also much large than a normal wolf more hulking to the size of a wolfhound or Great Dane. It looked as if the wolfs muscles should rip out and fall off its bones but amazingly they stayed in place. The wolf watched him carefully as he paced a circle around the boy. Kegan turned in pace keeping in a loose, light stance much like he used for sparring. The wolf suddenly sprang at Kegan but the boy sidestepped and slashed at the wolves side. The dagger glistened and angry red but seed to only graze the surface of the canine’s body. The creature landed turned and sprang again. Kegan didn’t have enough time to move so he braced himself the best he could and tried to stab the wolf in the chest. Once again the dagger flashed but did not manage to penetrate the flesh and Kegan was bowled over by the creature’s size compared to his. As the wolf feel upon him its claws raked across his left shoulder, ripping through his t-shirt that he was wearing. He felt a strange charged sensation ripple through his body. As he fell hard on the ground he felt the felling release and there was a flash of red lighting that came from the point of the dagger and knocked the wolf off of him. He clamored to his feet and got ready for the wolfs next charge but it was no where to be found. He stood and surveyed the area, hoping to find some trace of the wolf or of Shannon but the only thing he saw was a dark figure of what could only be a man standing amongst the flames of a burning house, watching him with glowing eyes. As he started to move to attack he felt a warm trickle down his chest. He awoke to find that he was lying in his bed. “Well that was the weirdest dream vie had in a while, maybe I should lay off the food before bed. His shoulder ached of some reason, and as he moved his hand up he hesitated wondering if he would find what he hoped he wouldn’t. He finally laid his hand down and felt four shallow cuts in his left shoulder, still oozing blood. He got up and ran to the bathroom where he found that they were in the same pattern as that of the claws of a beast, and in that moment Kegan knew his life was getting ready to take a sudden sharp turn. Whether it was for good or bad he could not guess
