SPOILERS
Both the original play and the new movie end when Sweeney is killed, leaving the audience to assume that Antony and Johanna live happily ever after.
...maybe By the Sea, lol

Play > Movie in my opinion. Johnny Depp should not sing....ever.

Hm. I saw it for the fourth time today. I'd say it can hold it's own against the play. Play > movie yes but that's not to say the movie isn't worth seeing multiple times. =P

Every time I see the trailer for this, I can't stop replaying Angela Lansbury's scene from the play where she does "The Worst Pies in London"... it's so great, I can't force myself to go see Sweeney at the cinema.
I'll probably rent it when it's released on DVD, though. I'm not wholly against it... just... mostly. Somewhat.

Ok so to answere the original question yes Johanna does run off with Antony or at least that is what they emply.
I personally thought that Johnny Depp has a great voice and loved him in this film. I normaly can't stand blood but I did ok with this one. After seeing the movie I went online and found Epiphany and have been playing it over and over again. Loved it and am going to buy it.

I suggest everyone check out the original cast recording- or the new one. They are both great. They pwn the movie soundtrack-which I received for Christmas.
But dont get the idea, it IS worth seeing in theaters. Every time I saw Alan Rickman appear, I said 'fifteen points from Gryffindor!"

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I did sit front row for the broadway revival.
Got spit on by Michael Cerveris and Patti Lupone-but it was fantastic-although alot of people who didn't know the story line originally had a tough time following it.
So far the times I've heard Johnny Depp's voice I haven't been particularly pleased by it. Sondheim is not easy stuff to sing by any means, even Alan Rickman sounded a bit out of range. I heard the acting was excellent though. =)
