Gamera's comic book thread was epic fail, so i'm gonna go ahead and make my own, considering, y'know, i work in comics and used to fucking own the movie boards.
5: X-2
the X-men film franchise has seen a constant flux of up and down, but X-2 was undeniably it's peak of quality. this was the first comic book movie to really get to the root of what it's source material was about, coupled with complex characterizations, little needless homage to the comics and a mindblowing opening action sequence, this was the best comic book movies had to offer until...
4: BATMAN BEGINS
the best superhero film ever made thus far. nobody before David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan had taken as much time and care with the liscence and character. the level of spot-on depth and dialogue with regards to accuracy and obvious attention to the character's detail and what makes that character one of literature's most endearing and fascinating was skillfull and precise.
3: THE ROAD TO PERDITION
the next three are not actually very close to the comic books they are based on, and that's partially why they are brilliant. The Road to Perdition was an underplayed, quiet film about a man and his son, and the roads we choose to walk in life. the comic book was a crude shadow of the film, really a blueprint to pick and choose from. the film's majesty and quiet contemplative emotion was so simply and wonderfully executed, this is one of my very favorite films.
2: A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
once again, not very close to it's source material. choosing to expand and improve upon it's basis rather than just do a straight telling, this film was, like Road to Perdition, a History of Violence is an underplayed masterpiece loaded with subtext rather than alot of extremitive soap box writing.
1: OLD BOY
the single greatest comic book film ever made. a Korean film loosely based on a japanese manga, Old Boy is a celebration of the pure depth and brilliance of all comic books both american and asian. an aesthetic power house. an art gallery of the best comic books and films in thier marriage have to offer in terms of visual style and depth of storytelling.
some others that didnt make the list but are still good comic flicks:
american splendor
ghost world
spiderman 2
300
sin city
