David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick

I almost picked Stanley Kubrick
but I don't see his skill at directing being much of the determining factor in the success of his films
he seems better at the basic creative influence than the actual work with the actors, camera work, effects, etc. - all of that was pretty generic

and I'm surprised no one said Hitchcock yet (though I personally feel the same about him as I do Kubrick)

Absolute favourite? I'd have to say Aronofsky at this point in time, though I consider him a film maker in the actual sense of the word and not solely a director.

no, he has a VCR and used to work at a video store. any "skill" the man has ever displayed is nothing more than plagerism from Russ Meyer and whatever other exploitation/kung fu director he could think to rip off. stealing from the obscure and riding thier back into fame doesnt make you a great director, it makes you a bastard who does too much coke.

i didnt take anything out on you, shirley. go to a video store that isnt Blockbuster and rent Kill Pussycat Kill Kill, Sweet Sweetback's Badass Song, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, and Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman. i garantee by the time you've watched all four your lips will have removed themselves from Tarentino's dick, which i'm willing to bet he stole from someone too.

alotta people like the guy so i can't see him copying

if anything, he may have stolen a few small things, what good director hasn't?

lots of shitty things are very popular. he's still a glorified plagarist. and i'm sure because i know more about moves than you do, snookums :) there's a difference between being influenced and flat out stealing. Tarentino flat out steals.

Seriously, just watch the films Pakx mentioned and you'll see that the 'few small things' lean more towards fucking massive chunks...

Also did someone really say that Hitchcock's camera work was generic? That all of his skill is focused in the story, not the technical skill? Really?

i do have to say, this made me feel so much better about disliking Quentin Tarantino. i dont *hate* him...but i have never understood all the hype about his movies. i've fallen asleep during all but Death Proof...and everyone always got mad at me for not liking em. i think i like him as a person...but i just can't watch his movies. and i've tried sooo hard.

the only thing i really liked with his name on it was HOSTEL and HOSTEL: part II....but thats cause he didnt write or direct them.
