Lord of the Rings is better. Star Wars may be a classic struggle, but it's full of cliches and the plot is predictable. Not to mention, the prequel trilogy kind of killed a lot of what made Star Wars great. I love Star Wars, but all in all Lord of the Rings had a better world and better story.

Lord of the Rings, definitely. I love Star Wars, but as a story, it fails compared to Lord of the Rings. Plus, Lucas is a really really weak script-writer. Plus, Lord of the Rings doesn't have Jar-Jar Binks.

Lord of the Rings is my all time favorite movie.
I absolutely hate Star Wars.
So all in all, Lotr, ftw.

well i'm going to go ahead and make an actualy arguement for my pick beyond "clerks 2 said this and it was teh funneh!"

Lord of the Rings is by far a superior franchise artistically and historically than Star Wars for many reasons (beyond the obvious fact that Lucas based much of his ideas for Star Wars on Lord of the Rings.) first of all, Kevin Smith is one guy, with one opinion, so when he did that whole arguement with himself about which was better, that wasnt any kind of arguement. I could have won that arguement.

first of all, overgeneralizing the plot to a film isnt an arguement towards a films cred, i can do it too, watch:
Star Wars was about walking through grey hallways, every film is spent for the most part, people walking through grey or dark grey hallways, usually sneaky, sometimes like a rap star walking into the Source awards. that's the whole movie, sneaking around hallways.

see? it's a moronic arguement.

fact is, until his vision was perverted by the studios and Steven Speilberg, Lucas wanted everyone in the movie to be a midget, (Hobbits anyone?) so dont tell me Lucas is some visionary, his entire plot is ripped off LOTR.

now, lets get down to the nitty gritty:

much of Star Wars' appeal lies purely in nostalgia, without that cheese factor, that whole stigma attached to star wars, there isnt much there. Star Wars is fun and silly and cool and flashy, but as a story, an epic and a directed film, Lord of The Rings holds more weight on all counts.

Lord of the Rings has inspired more works than any other story in the world. every piece of fantasty, science fiction, the very notion of the modern epic, is all taken from Lord of The Rings, and as films go, there really isnt THAT much difference between the mood and feel of Star Wars episodes 4 5 and 6, and Star Wars episodes 1,2 and 3. they're all cheesy special effects driven poorly written soap operas, only difference is the computer programs available at the time.


but the REAL point is, you cannot convince any star wars fan of this, why? because Star Wars has 30 years of nostalgia on LOTR. it doesnt matter how much better the LOTR films are in comparason to Star Wars, not liking the original Star Wars films is like saying you kick puppies for fun to these people, they look at you like you're a monster.

so in the end, star wars is gonna win out for one reason and one reason alone: hopeless fanboyism.
