I loved that movie. I plan to buy it on DVD when it comes out in five days.
My favorite part would have to be the very end right before Leonidas dies when he says "My Queen, My wife, My love". It was one of the few movie moments to make me cry.

it made you cry??? ***! lolz

It's understandable.
The protagonist was shot full of arrows for his country when he would never be able to see his home again, or his wife or his son.
Call me crazy but watching 300 brave men get slaughtered to protect the land and people they love is something worthy of tears.

300 was an amazing movie. The action was great but the script... Gah other than the one liners the speech was HORRIBLE. The Queen was simply retarded, she destroyed quotes from ancient times that were actually said but she managed to butcher. Don't get me wrong, some of my all time favorite lines are in that movie but pretty much anything that took over 20 seconds to say made me wince.

Also the whole FREEDOM deal that the Spartans were going ON and ON and ON about is laughable. The Spartans had an entire slave caste called Helots. They outnumbered Spartans 3-1 and many times revolted only to be slaughtered. When they talk about forcing the Spartan boys to steal, fight, and kill.... well they made them do that to the Helots not fellow Spartans. That boy that Leonidas is pounding to a pulp? GURANTEED that was a Helot. The Spartans were fighting for freedom. The freedom to do on their own in Greece what the Persians were doing in the East. :D

Still it was meant to be blood and guts not educational. I still love the movie.

And oh yea, Immortals > all.

Actually, the Spartans did have a relatively free society, just not a very democratic one. Their government was run by two kings to keep each other in balance and a council, and this was during the time when democracy was just beginning to sprout up. Just because the Helots were enslaved doesn't mean that Spartan didn't believe in freedom. America had slavery, and they were still free, at least the citizens were. Same in Sparta. That boy that Leonidas is pounding to a pulp is another Spartan, who is also undergoing training in the agoge. Finally, the Spartans didn't have any desires to expand into the rest of Greece as you suggest, and for most of their history they were isolationists, until after the end of the Peloponnesian War, when they got too confident from having conquered Athens.

Immortals were actually crap compared to Spartans, or most Greeks for that matter. They might have been good as far as fighting unarmed nomads in the East was concerned, but they had crappy armor, and didn't stand a chance against a Greek hoplite.

Just because the Helots were enslaved doesn't mean that Spartan didn't believe in freedom. America had slavery, and they were still free, at least the citizens were.

What it means is that I gurantee that the Greeks weren't talking about freedom every five seconds in the battle of Thermoplyae. They were probably talking about how they were fighting to keep from being members of a dictatorship, or submitting to a foreign power, or being to reduced to the levels of Helots themselves.

Same in Sparta. That boy that Leonidas is pounding to a pulp is another Spartan, who is also undergoing training in the agoge.

This one I just out and out disagree with you. Agoge was the Spartan boys terrorizing the Helots pure and simple. Picking fights with them, stealing from them, etc. The purpose of this was two-fold: Make sure the Spartan boys were hard asses and also that they were NEVER friendly to the Helots so that any revolt by the Helots would have NO shot of succeeding.

Finally, the Spartans didn't have any desires to expand into the rest of Greece as you suggest, and for most of their history they were isolationists, until after the end of the Peloponnesian War, when they got too confident from having conquered Athens.

So let's get this straight, isolationists just up and conquered Athens? No right after the Persian Wars in which Sparta led the land battles and Athens destroyed the Persian Navy they were expanding like mad. Then they ran into each other. Ultimately it was Corinth/Thebes that came out on top. The Spartans controlled nearly the entirety of the Peloponesse land mass outside of Sparta.

Immortals were actually crap compared to Spartans, or most Greeks for that matter. They might have been good as far as fighting unarmed nomads in the East was concerned, but they had crappy armor, and didn't stand a chance against a Greek hoplite.

?? Yes a military force that was responsible for the creation of the largest empire the world had ever seen at that time was crap. They simply ran into ill-suited terrain. The Persian Army, and hence the Immortals, were meant for the vast plains of Asia and conquered some extremely powerful nations there, not just "unarmed nomads". Also they had very little metal armor and wicker shields. What the hell do you expect? I read a book once, can't remember the title, that said if the Immortals had metal armor they'd have conquered Greece and beyond.

In short the Immortals defeat was a combination of terrain and technology, hardly a knock on their skill. And for the record I simply thought they looked amazing in the comic and book.

Agreed, but it doesn't mean that freedom wasn't a goal as well.

Only part of the agoge was related to terrorizing helots. In fact, the terrorizing of the helots would have occurred at a later stage, probably around the age of 16, when a Spartan would have to secretly murder a helot as a rite of passage. The Spartans were militaristic to make sure that the helots were kept down, but it doesn't mean they were out and about killing helots all the time. The agoge focused on training between Spartan males, and as ritual they'd beat each other, as was part of what that scene shows. I guarantee you that that boy was a Spartan as well.

They didn't "just up and conquer Athens." They were engaged in a very long war with Athens and the Delian League, and Sparta won after it managed to defeat the Athenian navy at Aegospotami. It also didn't control most of the Peloponnese, it controlled Lacedemonia. The rest was under the other city states of Peloponnese who were part of the Peloponnesian League, whose head was Sparta.

?? Yes a military force that was responsible for the creation of the largest empire the world had ever seen at that time was crap. They simply ran into ill-suited terrain. I read a book once, can't remember the title, that said if the Immortals had metal armor they'd have conquered Greece and beyond.
They might have been skilled fighters, but their fighting techniques and their armor was no match for that of the Greeks. They were trained in ranged combat and rapid assaults. I'm sure if they did have metal armor, it would have been harder for the Greeks, but they would not have had metal armor since it would have hampered their mobility. Their fighting style was just very different than that of the Greek fighting style, which revolved around the phalanx.
In short the Immortals defeat was a combination of terrain and technology, hardly a knock on their skill. And for the record I simply thought they looked amazing in the comic and book.
I know, I was just ranting lol.

I know someone who got that scene where he kicks the guy into his hole tattooed on his back. I think that was kind of stupid and expensive, but really good movie. My favorite part was when the wife stabbed the traitor. ^_^ Amazingly well done cinamatography or however you spell that.

LOVED! LOVED! LOVED 300. But I was dissapointed that they didn't give at least some time to the Athenian Navy and the sea battle, which was also pretty fing cool.

300 was not, by any means historically accurate, but it never claimed to be, it was very faithful to Frank Miller's comic book, but that's not necessarily a good thing.

all in all, it was fun in it's own brainless homoerotic violent way. i saw it twice and had a good time on both occasions, and i may just buy the DVD once it's preowned at Blockbuster and less than 12 bucks.

i'm not gonna flame you, but that was done for a reason, mate. it's so the movie, like Sin City, would look just like the comic book it was based on.

Amazing Movie, Not perfectly historically accurate, but how many movies are these days. The story was informative about the spartan culture while also exciting as hell. Of course, they don't give you a lot of info on the spartans but more than what I knew going into the movie.
