I've been vegetarian for four years.
Originally it was for animal rights/welfare, then it shifted more to health purposes... And lately people have been asking me about it, and honestly, I think I do it out of habit now. I mean, it's been so long, and I'm definitely not as strict as I used to be... I used to avoid anything that even touched meat, and now I'll settle with pizza with the pepperoni picked off, and soups with beef broth... I stopped caring about gelatin ages ago. A couple of times I was unsure whether an eggroll or something had meat in it, and I ate it anyway.
I think the only real reason I don't eat meat now is just that I think the texture would freak me out. But then I started thinking, what would I be okay with?
I was actually considering getting some chicken from a local chinese place and just... wow. As soon as I realized I was considering it, I just freaked out. I'm so different now, it's weird.
I still don't think I'd be able to eat pork or beef, but I have to admit, I do miss chicken.
Have any of you gone back to meat after being a vegetarian? How was it?
Please don't bash vegetarians in your responses, or tell me the horrors of factory farming etc. As I said, I already know all of that, that's why I got into it in the first place.

^ Not really... It's getting to be quite normal. And it's been around for thousands of years.
Anyway, update.. I did in fact have some chicken today, about an hour ago, and I am having a horrible horrible stomach-ache. I think I'm going to puke.
It did taste good though.

Meat will do that to me too. A couple weeks ago at the luncheon after a funeral They had Spaghetti with MEAT sauce, and being at a funeral that's really not the place to complain. and after i ate, i ran to the bathroom and threw up. I had the poops and the worst stomach ache for like a week. i felt horrible! and i didn't eat that much meat. like the teenyest bit possible. :eek2:

Yeah, Ive been vegetarian for 2 yrs going on 3. DONT WORRY! Its normal.
After so long, we tend to slip up. Don't beat yourself up.
I recommend a cleansing. What you do is for 48 hours, drink tons of water and eat only vegetables. It sounds extreme but when you're done it gives you a renewed sense of focus. It cleanses your colon of all slip ups you may have had. Spiritually, think of it as cleansing your soul.
If you feel you cannot resist, try alternatives like cage free eggs, free range meats, kosher... There is no shame...please don't worry. I've been through it and it drove me to such guilt trips. You have to realize that while you are ultimately making a difference. One time will not end the world. Animals are slaughtered every day. I promise you...as long as you stick to your values in the long run...you'll be fine.
I always worry if my friends found out I slipped up once or twice... I can imagine the teasing. I just learned to deal with it on my own and repent.
I'm here for ya for support so don't be shy about iming me on aim.

^ Well, I don't think that would help, since I hate PETA and don't trust them, and I sort of lost my passion for animal rights years ago.
But thanks.

Eating meat has been around for millions of years.
Vegetarianism has been around since Pythagoras, around 500 BC. Though to be fair it wasn't titled as "vegetarianism" until the 1800's.
And veganism is bullshit.

i've been a vegetarian since i was six. i have never gone back to meat and i never will. i am one because i believe that animals should not be used for our own personal purposes and my thoughts towards that won't change. i can barley even be in the same room as meat.

The definition of a vegetarian is someone who does not eat animal flesh.
I never knowingly ate flesh while I considered myself a vegetarian.

No, see below.
The definition of a vegetarian is someone who does not eat animal flesh.
I never knowingly ate flesh while I considered myself a vegetarian.
The actual definition is
A vegetarian consistently avoids all flesh foods as well as byproducts of meat, fish, and poultry. A vegetarian avoids refried beans made with lard, soups made with meat stock, and foods made with gelatin such as some kinds of candy and most marshmallows.
Being Vegetarian for Dummies - Suzanne Havala, M.S., R.D.
Thus you are not a 'real' vegetarian.

im a pretty strict vegetarian... i dont eat gelatin or anything... but i completely understand people missing it, i really do!!!!! but i just feel so bad if i consider it! I kind of gradually gave up meat about 4 years ago... now when i really want to eat meat i just buy an alternative... like fake chicken fajita strips or fake bacon. It's not the same, but it makes the cravings go away!
the best thing was a couple weeks ago i went to a festival and nearly all the stalls had veggi food! I was in heaven cos there was loads of stuff that tasted like meat but wasnt!!

No, see below.

Thus you are not a 'real' vegetarian.
That wasn't a definition. That was just what one woman wrote in a book.
If we're going to play that game, here's an excerpt from A Teen's Guide to Going Vegetarian by Judy Krizmanic...
The nice thing about being a vegetarian is that you can go about it in many, many ways. But we should start with a basic definition, so we know what we're talking about here. A vegetarian is someone who eats no meat of any kind- No beef, no pork, no poultry, no fish. As mentioned above, the term vegetarian is sometimes used pretty loosely by people who have all different types of diets.
VEGETARIAN: This is the most commonly used term, and it means a diet that doesn't contain any meat (beef, pork, poultry, seafood). It may include other animal products.
That is the most basic definition - one who avoids consuming animal flesh. When you get into by-products, you need to investigate the reasons for the particular person's decision to stay on a vegetarian diet. For example, someone who has absolutely no concern for animals, but stays meat-free for health purposes, would not give a flying fuck if there is a trace amount of bone tissue in their yogurt, in the form of gelatin.
I wasn't a STRICT vegetarian, but I was a vegetarian, yes.

I'm seriously considering becoming a vegetarian, but for health reasons. I do care about animals, but health just gives me more motivation.

Actually is normal for your body. Humans are omnivores by choice only.

I have been to farms where animals are taken in from factory farms. The abuse is very real. Being veg. makes a big difference. For every vegetarian 94 animals are saved.
