I just got liquid eyeliner, but I usually use eyeliner pencil and I've never used liquid before. Does anyone have any tips on how to use it well?

When I try, I usually mess up and make it smear/go on too thick.

I just got some too, two weeks ago.
I reccomend having a handful of q-tips on hand for when you mess up.
Um..try getting as close to the mirror as you can when you put it on and really focus on creating a straight line across your eyelid.

above all keep practicing at it, because you will get better!

Practice makes perfect! Or of course it could be that your eye liner is just crappy.

Just try to aim for RIGHT where your lashes meet your eyelid, and rather than trying to draw one long straight line, make several short little strokes and sort of blend them into eachother. It gets easier the more you do it.

Practice, Practice! I use to always use liquid eyeliner. Close your one eye, and pull on the side so it stretches your eyelid flat. (you don't need to pull on it too much, just so it smoothes it out) Start in the middle and go out towards the end your "pulling" on, and then go back to the middle and go down to your inner-eye, or start back from the inner part, whatever you find easier. It's okay if you make it too-thick or messy, because thats what q-tips are for! If your not wearing eyeshadow, just wet it and fix it up. Thinner near the creases, thicker as you go out usually looks the nicest. If you are wearing eyeshadow, let the eyeliner dry and then use a dry q-tip to "chip" any mistakes off.
