She Cares

There she is. Standing in the lunch line, grabbing an apple, an orange juice, and a granola bar. They were complete opposites. Jessie was on student council, the soccer team, got good grades, and made friends easily; she also liked pop music and the colour blue. Matt never signed up or volunteered for anything, hated sports, had no friends and liked heavy metal and the colour black. He hated life, hated people, hated posers and whiners and druggies and preps. But he loved her. She was special. When he would have an especially bad day, she would give him a smile that made it all go away. Sometimes she would say hi and ask him how things are going and they would talk for a couple minutes. But they were never really considered friends. More…acquaintances. So anyways she took her lunch and sat down with her friends. And he continued to stare at her.

"Hey loser move of my way." Tyler said; a guy on the soccer team that thought he was king of the world. And oh yeah, Matt hated jocks too. "Make me." "Alright I will, I'll punch your face out." "Go ahead." They went through this every so often, Tyler made threats and Matt didn't really care because he never followed through with them. Tyler looked silly with a red face and clenched teeth while Matt stood there as if he was looking a puppy in the face. "You better just watch out kid." He remarked and started to walk away. "Alright then I'll do that…" Matt mumbled, but somehow Tyler heard. "What was that you little punk?" But before he could say another smart remark Tyler punched him in the face. His friends laughed and snickered at Matt as he lay there with a bleeding jaw. Tyler went off to soak up the glory. "Oh my God are you okay?" He heard a voice but couldn't tell who it was. Am I really that out of it, or is that Jessie sitting beside me? She got some paper towel to soak up the blood and helped him up. He didn't say a word. "Oh it's 12:45 I have go, I'm sorry about this whole thing, bye." And just like that she was gone. He was alone again. As if nothing had happened.

Jessie was walked out of the school and around the corner of the faded brick wall. Matt was standing there. Frantically cutting at his hands, wrists, and arms, repeating, "Nobody cares." She didn't know him all too well. He was the guy standing around listening to his radio, with his ratty worn clothes and faded backpack, probably too poor to get an mp3 player. Not saying much to anybody. She always wondered what was going through his head as he watched the random people walk by. So anyways, in spite of himself, he started sobbing. He was a sad sight to see. She felt so sorry for him. To calm him down she hugged him; put her hand on the back of his head, and other on his shoulder. Even though he had reached hysteria and was holding a sharp piece of metal, she wasn't scared of him hurting her. Or his blood staining her clothes. She then whispered in his ear "I care." And waited uncertainly for the hug to be returned. He sniffled, and smiled. She cares. She cares about me. I matter. I'm not alone. He put his hands softly on the sides of her back, scared of his own feelings, and finally, giving into what he wanted, not being scared of letting someone else in, letting someone love him, drew her close and hugged her tight, his arms almost reaching back to himself. She cares. She cares. She's…pulling away. He lightly held on, looked into her eyes and choked out "Never let go." She stopped for a moment, then looked down to his bloody hand, and grasped it in hers. And he understood. She would never really let go. She cares. She cares. She… "Matt! Oh my God. Someone call nine one one!" Sirens. "He's losing blood fast, I'm gonna need an OTT stat and a…" "Matt!"

He opened his eyes. Saw the white tiles of the ceiling. The IV with positive B blood almost to the bottom, the blue-white sheets covering him, and her. Sitting there with her head on the side of the bed, with worry on her face, holding onto his hand. "Jessie." She opened her eyes and as soon as they met his all the worry was gone. "You're okay!" She said, with such happiness it made all the scary thoughts about the hospital, the IV bag, and how much trouble he'd be in go away. "You didn't let go." "Well I had to when they bandaged up your hand…" They both smiled. "But I didn't want to." "I know." "Matt?" "Yeah." "Promise me you'll never hurt yourself again." He smiled to himself, later he said it was because of the serious look she had, and the joy he felt. "I promise."

It was there one-year 'anniversary' and Matt knew he had to get her something special. He wanted too. His first real gift. He'd been saving up for months to get her the perfect thing. And he knew exactly what to get too. He went to the jewellers counter in the local mall, pointed to the necklace and said, "That one," smudging the freshly cleaned glass with his finger. He counted out his money carefully, then took the little box from the smug, distrustful man. He walked down the street, up an alley and towards a road to Jessie's house. He rang the doorbell that always skipped the second chime. And there she was, in her green sweater and yellow skirt, bright and beaming. Smiling. Even though they had been dating for a year he was still amazed every time he saw her, amazed at how she could always have a smile on her face, never feel sorry for herself or complain. She was always beautiful. She was perfect, in his eyes. "Hi." "Hey, do you want to go for a walk?" "Sure." So they walked. Matt considered picking a flower for her, but he didn't want to be too predictable and mushy. "I got something for you." "What is it?" "Well I can't tell you that, just look." He opened up the box and put in her hand. She started at it. "Wow." Then the blank expression turned into a smile. "Thank you." She hugged him and gave him a kiss. "But why an angel?" "Because you saved me when I was depressed, you were my angel, and always will be."

I like the story. I think maybe more description and clearer dialogue would be nice and I love your comment at the bottom. That made me chuckle. It's nice, well done.

paragraph 1
There she is. Standing in the lunch line, grabbing an apple, an orange juice, and a granola bar. They were complete opposites.
great beginning. Starts the story off right away, kinda.
So anyways she took her lunch and sat down with her friends. And he continued to stare at her.
IMO, I don't think that line should start with 'so anyways'

paragraph 2
"Hey loser move of my way."
out of my way?
And oh yeah, Matt hated jocks too.
take the 'and' out

paragraph 3
Jessie was walked out of the school and around the corner of the faded brick wall.
was walked? as in someone walked with her? :slash:
He sniffled, and smiled. She cares. She cares about me.
If I were you, I'd either italic his thoughts, or start a new paragraph when he starts thinking.

paragraph 5
It was there one-year 'anniversary' and Matt
there should be they're

other notes :
separate all the dialogue. only one person is supposed to talk per paragraph.
aww the ending's really cute!
