I LOVE that movie.
On the surface the Lisbons appear to be a healthy, successful 1970s family living in a middle-class Michigan suburb. Mr. Libson is a math teacher, his wife is a rigid religious mother of five attractive teenage daughters who catch the eyes of the neighborhood boys. However, when 13-year-old Cecilia commits suicide, the family spirals downward into a creepy state of isolation and the remaining girls are quarantined from social interaction (particularly from the opposite sex) by their zealously protective mother.
Really great movie.
The book was better though.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME
i actually liked the movie and the book equally because the movie really did stay true to the book, except they had to shorten it alot. i loved Josh Hartnett in it, the best acting job hes done i think. and i loved Kirsten Dunst, she plays the innocence (yet corruption) so well. Sofia Coppola directed it really well. ive seen it easily over a hundred times. in fact ive probably memorized it.
my fave quotes from it are
"youre not even old enough to know how bad life gets"
"Obviously doctor, youve never been a 13 year old girl"
"What we have here is a dreamer, someone completely out of touch with reality"
"Youre a stone fox"

" She was the still point of the turning world, man."
" The trees, like lungs, filling with air. My sister - the mean one - pulling my hair. "
"Have we photosynthesized our breakfast today? "

I read the book first and the first time I saw the movie I really disliked it.
Second time I saw it, loved it.
I'm odd, :)

The Virgin Suicides is interesting and unsettling at first, but not too adhesive. I don't believe any insight into the human condition can be rendered here, rather an improbable, somewhat pretentious, artistic effort that tries to perplex more than explain.
Overall it's one of my favourite movies EVER!
