is the war of the world (2005) good or bad?

I wanted to punch Dakota Fanning.

i didn't like it. i thought it was stupid.

I thought it was OK. Rent it, that's what I usually do.

eh, the first half is pretty great, the build up to the invasion, then the invasion, the attack, is all rather fantastic.

Really gives you a sense of the scale and horror of it when everyone is trying to escape on that ferry only for tripods to come out of the river, then two come from behind on top of the hill, just that sense of "oh fuck there's really no where to run. "

However the second half is really quite shitty. Plot holes all over the place, it ends incredibly abruptly, completely ridiculous unbelievable "oh look turns out all the main characters are fine and his wifes entire street is somehow entirely un damaged.".

So just watch the first half then imagine a better second half, heh.

It was a good movie, despite Tom Cruise being a total dousche for everything he does on and off the set. The only part that SERIOUSLY pissed me off was the battle between the Army and the tripods. When the son wanted to run away and help fight them, I was just thinking 'Wow, thats just fucking stupid. If they actually let him live, this is gonna be gay', and whaddaya know?

Though the part where the first Tripods came out from underground was amazing!

The original radio broadcast kicks ass, the older film was ok, I've never read the book and the new film was just wank...

if you like senseless plots that make rediculous twists which cannot and will not be explained
if you like the dude from Shawshank Redemptions awful new york accent
if you like tom cruise pretending he A: knows black people and B: likes women
and if you like that pompos midgetous raving lunatic saving the day again singlehandedly and STILL nobody dying
and if you like stephen speilberg wasting away his last days as a director in special effects hell,
then this movie is for you.

bad '50s cinema doesnt get extra points because it was made in the 50's. it's just as lame, poorly written and driven by cheap special effects as the new version. the only reason War of The Worlds even passes as a classic is because of Orson Welles. if he hadnt scared the living shit out of so many people, we wouldnt need to be arguing over two shitty sci fi films.

i went to the cinema to see it, thought it was gonna be really good although when it got to the end i couldn't help thinking i've just lost 2 and a half hours of my life that i aint never gonna get back!
