Films like One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, City of God, Taxi Driver, Requiem For A Dream and The Shawshank Redemption for their brilliant perception on certain areas of lifes issues.

Also, classics like Casablanca, 12 Angry Men, It's A Wonderful Life, Citizen Kane and Anatomy of A Murder for obvious reasons.

I am Sam, it changes your view of certian people.I really think I need to see this film. People keep mentioning to me how good it is.

Anyway, my movie must see choice would be Stand By Me, My Own Private Idaho and The Mosquito Coast. River Phoenix plays a part in all three and I find them to be very entertaining and thought giving.

American History X It gives you great insight into the mind of a racist, gives you hope that change can occur and doesn't sugar coat the reality that sometimes, it is too late.
The basketball diaries I personally love this movie. It proves that tough love can work. That no matter how low you are in life, you can rise above it. The ending is a bit cliche but I think the movie is more than worth watching.
Casablanca The girl in me tells me to mention this movie as well. It's a movie I can and have watched over and over again. A real tear jerker, the sacrifice the characters are forced to make for the greater good is something I never get tired of.
Hotel Rwanda This movie is one of my all time favorites. It's so beautifully told and the message is so incredibly important, I reccomend it to anyone. You will not regret watching this film.
V for Vendetta I love this movie. Natalie Portman did a great job and although some *cough* my father *cough* would say it's a little out there, I think it's a perfect example of what can happen to the world if people don't learn to speak up and defend what is right. Freedom is a term thrown around too loosley these days and I think this movie is a prime example.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest This movie is gold. It has such a strong message behind it and the main character, played by Jack Nicholson, in this movie is one of my favorites of any movie.

V for Vendetta

Incorrect. If you want the messages of this film, read 1984, and mix in lesbians and knives. They took a wonderful graphic novel, ripped it up, and went off in their own direction, only keeping an image of Guy Fawkes to prove that "Hey, it really is based on the work of Alan Moore!".

Must see movies:

Oldboy
Seven Samurai
Rashômon
The Princess Bride
Garden State
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

These are, of course, but a few.

Geez, it's great you want to post contradicting opinions and all, but there's no need to be a dick about it.

Whilst V certainly had it's problems i thought it was a fairly good interpretation of the original graphic novel. Better than what they did to League of Extraordinary gentlemen anyway. *shudders*

It was a joke, at least the comment about having taste was. But V was still a rape-at-gunpoint of the graphic novel. Alan Moore wouldn't have his name connected with it. And yes, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was far worse, but that's like saying my dog took two shits, and one smelled a little better.

American Beauty, it manages to show you what is important in life, in a setting that we live in. Not to mention it's simply one of the most well made movies.

Okie Doke, now that i'm back on TS and the movie forums are still in thier perpetual state of shit, i'll go back to screaming at a brick wall while people murder thier minds with shit films like V for Vendetta :)

now, so far Elationeering has the idea, but i'm gonna expand on those babies for a tick:

Seven Samurai: if you havent seen this movie then you dont know shit about movies, you arent a film buff, you arent anything. this is the most important film ever made, it changed film forever and brought the name of a god to the ears of the western world, and that name was Kurosowa. almost every great film that's appeared on this thread sk far owes a great deal to The Seven Samurai, from Requiem for a Dream to Taxi Driver to The Godfather.

Citizen Kane: Orson Welles classic 1954 blend of fact and fiction is absolutely positively fabulous. it invented the art of Film Noir, and gave birth to the first real american film auteur: Orson Welles.

American Beauty: Sammy Mendez is a genius, and this is his masterpiece. so many film makers today try to recapture the magic that was American Beauty and fail miserably. there is only one film like it, and there always will be only one.

2001: A Space Odyssey: let me word this carefully so there's no way i can exaggerate here: The Best Science Fiction Film Ever Made.

QTF. i think the only Alan Moore film i didnt want to vomit half way through was From Hell, and still, it wasnt anything special and Johnny Depp's british accent is fucking painful.

it was alright, certainly brave for it's time. i have a pretty big selection of black and white films-mostly westerns and detective noir and horror and such- but most of my favorite films are recent. most movies made back in the day were glamor films and i hate glamor films (other than Sunset Blvd. fucking classic.) infact other than kurosowa and welles, i find very little art in what, back then, was considered "high brow" film. but that's always been true of cinema. in the seventies we saw a total reinvention of film with Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Taxi Driver, the days of politically sound suit and tie films were over and giving way to uncooth darkness and raw human storytelling, as well as the reinvention of the horror genre, which in the 80's gave way to one of my very favorite films of all time: The Evil Dead, a child of two pieces of work totally ignored by the so called artistic elite: Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Three Stooges.

and that's the end of my inpromptu film thoery lecture.

xmikax3
09-18-2006, 03:11 AM
Yes, this is a bump. Oh, and Pakx, you seem to know a fair bit about movies, any others you recommend watching?

Pakx
09-18-2006, 08:53 AM
anything by Chanwook Park. this guy is the best film maker alive today.

Miyusaki is a genius and his masterpiece - Princess Mononoke - has been a staple of my DVD collection since it started. it's also one of the only anime's where the dubbing is worth checking out, because Neil Gaiman did the translation.

everyone needs to see the following horror movies:
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness.
The Exorcist
Ju-On

animation fans should put down the lion king and check out
the incredibles
the iron giant
waking life
princess mononoke
akira
ghost in the shell
and of course, Ninja Scroll.

some of my favorite unsung mainstream films are Kung Fu Hustle, Unbreakable, Lord of War, Equilibrium, Unleashed and The Aristocrats.

oh, and with Luc Besson leaving film, everyone needs to see Leon The Professional, this is one of the best action movies you'll ever find, it's cool, stylish, well written, well acted, and has alot of great story and heart to it. one of those action movies girls like just as much as guys. Luc Besson has this masterful way of making films anybody can love, and Leon is his masterpiece.

so there ya go. happy watching.

Pakx

just some other things that came to mind:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is fantastic, so is Goodnight and Goodluck and Syriana if you're into political films. A History of Violence was the best film of 2005, and to all you Prison Break fans, check out The Human Stain with anthony hopkins, nicole kidman and wentworth miller. i'm not a big fan of prison break, but wentworth miller certainly prooves himself here.

also Road to Perdition is a fantastic sophmore film by Sam Mendez (american beauty) based on the graphic novel of the same name, which is a remake of Lone Wolf and Cub, an ancient japanese tale turned comic book about an assassin and his son.

and for the love of god people, i know it's not strictly a movie, but go out there, and buy Firefly. it's one of the greatest TV shows ever made, it got cancelled after 11 episodes because Fox is retarded, and the entire series costs about 24 bucks on DVD. the movie (Serenity) was fantastic too, but it just wasnt the show. so please, buy it, watch it, love it, and wear the name "Browncoat" proudly.

graves of the fireflies
by miyazaki and we all know he's a legend

Isao Takahata wrote and directed Grave of the Fireflies, not Miyazaki. But, needless to say it's worth watching, as well as anything by Miyazaki.

I'll agree more or less to the majority of films already mentioned (especially Seven Samurai.) And for those that said Firefly, it may not be a movie, But the series is worth watching, as well as Serenity.

A Touch Of Zen.

Cradle of fear, Cannibal holocaust.

huh? dude those movies are "if you're a big horror fan and like cheap gore flicks" not "must see" especially Cannibal Holocaust, which is so obscure and uninfluential i dunno how you could even imply someone has to see it.
