View Full Version : Would anyone like to be my Linux geek?

Yeah.

Basically, I want to get Ubuntu Linux set up on this box. Again.

Now I have to explain the "again" part: I got it set up perfectly fine, right up until I put in my new graphics card. Windows boots fine, but Ubuntu gets all snippy and both a: won't get to the graphic desktop and b: cuts off one character on the left in terminal mode.

What I need to do is get Ubuntu uninstalled (I screwed up a couple of other things, too), figure out how to get it to recognize my graphics card, and then get it re-installed. And then I need someone to generally help me via an IM program whenever I find something tricky/now working in the way that the documentation specifies. So, is anyone willing to help me with this? I'm fairly good with computers, but the whole Linux thing is a bit much for me, especially since I can't get any books or printed documentation. So, um, is anyone willing to talk me through/imform me on some of this stuff via AIM or MSN or whatever? Ugh. I feel queasy doing this, but I honestly don't even have an idea where to start looking for answers. Sometimes you just need someone more skilled than yourself, you know?

Yeah, anyway, I type cleanly, use good English and I promise not to solicit you for pictures or anything (if female). Someone/anyone?

Although I love computers, Linux just simply is not my specialty and I would not want to make a mistake. I'm sorry
TeenSpot is filled with a lot of drones and rebels. Most (sadly) don't know a lot about computers. I'm sure if you went to another "geek" site and posted there, they would be happy to help you and could get the job done well.
Good luck!!!

Trust me, I know posting this is a crapshoot. I'm just trying to get someone a little closer to my age to help me through this. I did have someone helping me a while ago, but in addition to being Finnish he just got a new job and, as such, is most unavaible to assist me.

Never used Ubuntu.

Just write over the partition, and reinstall it with Gentoo or *BSD on there. You'll be happier.

Ubuntu should be able to wipe out its own partition (although I have heard that ubuntu and an already established partition don't always play nice) but just put the iso in again and it can clear and re-install, just make sure you get the right partiton, also is you graphics card ati?

nVidia GeForce FX 5500. It was free, shut up.

I haven't actually tried re-installing yet, mostly because a: the partition/format program that's part of the installer is messed up, so I have to do it via terminal and b: I always assumed Ubuntu wouldn't boot properly because it didn't have a proper driver or somesuch blah blah megapixel resolumotion blah blah. I'll maybe give that a try later.

Get a Gentoo LiveCD and enter cfdisk

It's easy to 'fix things' in command line. ; )
