I rented and saw "The Libertine" just recently, and concluded a few things.

1.) A movie can, in fact, be borderline NC-17 within the first five minutes.
and
2.) Johnny Depp will never cease to amaze me with the versatility of his acting. He's even wicked cool when he's portraying an incredible asshole with syphilis.

I loved the opening and ending, where Rochester speaks to the audience. I adored the acting (that's already obvious, though). It had some slow-moving parts, but I was never exactly bored because the main character was so interesting, as were the reactions and interactions of the other characters to/with him. It was a weird feeling that Rochester created because he wasn't a symphathetic character at all until the very, very end. And not even then for some of the people I watched it with.

I was wondering if anyone else here has seen it, and what they thought. It came out in 2004, but as well as memory serves, I want to know. Even though it was R-rated, I doubt that would keep many of the TSers from seeing it.

Omg, "The Libertine" hasn't come out here yet. I've watched the opening of it though. And when he says, "I am John Wilmot, and I do not want you to like me", in that.. venemous tone of voice... uh, God.. let's just say I got shivers. I can't wait to see it.

You'll like it. You won't like him, as he says, but you'll love the movie.

it was an alright little flick, Depp is one of those guys who is a fantastic actor who just happens to be in alot of really shit movies, but when he's in something even the slightest bit credible, he shines: POTC, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, and so fourth and so on. sure, there's always gonna be the horrid flicks he does like Edward Scissorhands (that's right i said it!) or Sleepy Hollow, but even in those films he manages to be passable.

Sorry to bump this a bit, I just watched it last night, it was inspired. I really didn't end up liking, or disliking him at the end, although I liked him at the begining of the movie. It was a bit disturbing... but there was this artistic victorian sense, even through the less than pleasant parts (the death scene...icky... but romantic)
