maybe get a fringe, it always thickens your hair, extensions, or layers

Agreed. My hairs at least 3-4 times thicker than that.

I'm trying to thin mine too.. and I did it!! It has taken a while for it to really flatten how how I want it to look. I've got a lot of really great haircuts lately. I've had the hairstylists use hair thinning shears on me, cut lots of layers, and razor up my hair a lot to thin it out. Also, this is kind of bad but I highlight my hair and a few months ago I was blonde from so much highlights (I'm a natural brunette) and I had one bad highlight job that fried my hair and so I had some breakage.. so yeah it was kind of sad that I didn't even mind the pieces that would break off. My hair LOOKED healthy and now it is after cutting off all the dry parts... so it works.
Also, I think if you grow thicker hair longer once it's thinned out it looks thinner.. since it lays flatter. I look at pictures of me back like 4 years ago and I'm like woahhh.. my hair looks SO much better now. I also flat iron it to really smooth it out and use really good conditioners to make it smooth and sleek.
For thickening up the hair, flat ironing probably will make it look too flat. I would blow dry it instead with a round brush and lift it up at the roots so it doens't fall flat. Use volumizing hair products and maybe give your hair some texture.. like waves or big curls. Layers also help whether you are trying to make your hair thinner OR thicker.. just tell your haistylist you want it to look thicker!
