Line your eyes with an eyeliner appropriate to your eye colour:

Brown = deep navy or black
Blue = deep brown
Green = deep plum, purple or brown
Hazel = deep green

Grey works for all eye colours.

line your upper eyelid by pulling the skin taut and drawing the pencil across as close to your lashline as possible. Extend the line a millimetre or so from the outer corner of your eye, and then dot the liner along your lower lashline to about 1/3 of the way in (right until the coloured part of your eye begins.)

With your pinkie finger, smudge the liner horzontally a little to make it look more natural and less harsh. Then get your hands on some eyeshadow matching your eyeliner and sweep some along the eyeliner and up to the crease of your eye. Darken the shadow along you crease of your eyes and then brush some a little above the crease just so it peeks up. Make sure to let it extend out with the eyeliner. The eyeshadow should be darker towards the outside of your eye and lighter (using a pearlescent shadow in the same colour as your shadow is a good idea) on the inside corners of your lids.

If you're using a slanted brush, dip it in water, dry it so it's just damp, dip it in the eyeshadow and swipe it on your lower lashline along the eyeliner. It should look soft, not harsh. If it looks harsh, dot it gently with your finger.

Finish off with a couple of coats of black or dark brown mascara.

Just using black eyeshadow looks cheap and drugged up, actually.

not if you blend it well enough. The same effect can be achieved just with black liner, you just need to vary the degree of darkness and smudge it appropriately. Q-tips also work well for blending and smudging.

I just want to give you some advice, when going for the smokey eyes, proceed with caution. Make sure you don't go over the edge with it. You want it to look tasteful, not trashy. Also, be sure you know the difference between the day and night looks. Too often I see girls who overdo the smokey eyes for a day look. Less is more in this case, because you want to look sexy without looking like you tried too hard or spent loads of time on it.
