lord of the rings would be able to beat the crap out of harry potter on a 'brilliant film'ness scale even if it was tied up on a chair with a sack over its head and only allowed use its asscheeks. actually if it was allowed to use a third of the power in its asscheeks it'd still win.

lol go LOTR :)
the book was longwinded true but it provided a lot of details for the directors to work with
which was probably why LOTR was so detailed

Lord of the Rings is much better than the Harry Potter movies (which I agree, are overrated). LOTR has better actors, scenery, costumes and a better plot/storyline.

I cant stand Lord of the Rings I didnt like them at all!
I loved the latest Harry Potter film, I think that the graphics & the stunts r really well planned out & have come across Amazingly on screen

Harry Potter doesn't even compare to Lord of the Rings! Everything in LOTR was amazing, from the acting to the scenery. And let's be honest, I don't think Harry Potter has any oscar winning performances... the acting has improved as the series has progressed, but it is still lacking.

Both in a diffent league.

One was written like 50 years ago for a start, and would include things to do with world war 2 and that cos Tolkien was an officer in world war 1 or 2 I forgot which one, probably WW1 actually.

And Harry Potter is a nice magical book based in modern day and is about wanting more, you know. Harry went from nothing, having a shit life and at Hogwarts he was like in his real home.

You just can't compare them. These books where written in different times and have different topics. I love the Lord of the Rings and if I had to choose then I'd say that book/movie/whatever wins but I can't because it would be unfair and stupid to compare it to a completely different book.

People really have to stop doing that.

i know it is really different genres but i actually wanted this thread more on the movie side of it but-

I would have to say i like both evenly.

They both have very good story lines, one more modern and the other well more in the past. The movies have good actors in both of them, but some people may say that LOTR has better actors, but personally I think thats because the actors are more experienced, and people would say that they're better actors but for the age of the actors in HP they are very good actors.

I beleive that Harry Potter is better ( Sorry LOTR Fans )
Dont get me wrong i read the LOTR books and i beleive that when it comes to the books personally LOTR has nothing on Harry Potter is was wriiten for the kids of our generation which may explain why i found LOTR such a hard read

In the case of films harry Potter let me down so LOTR kicks its arse ( only in films)

I happen to have loved lord of the rings, but harry potter has a slight edge over it, since its targeted at a younger audience (kids and teenagers) plus its fun for the whole family to watch, you can never guess what harry potters up to next (unless you've read the books :p wich I havnt)

Harry Potter is good if you don't have an absolute age to watch or read Lord of the Rings...
Especially the extended versions, Anyone know the record for not stop dvd watching? My friends and I will attempt to break it by watching LotR back to back followed by ever episode of Teachers. Add more we will if that's not enough...

TheElusivePimpernel
12-04-2005, 07:55 AM
I do that for fun.....not the teachers bit though, i hate that show.

Leon_The_Professional
12-04-2005, 08:18 AM
We do it for fun, what more fun can their be than crashing at a friends and watching over 24 hours of solid tv?
We think back to back Teachers lasts just over 24 hours alone, fantastic me thinks.

there is no way that the Harry Potter books could beat the LOTR books. i reread all the books i own, and LOTR is one of the ones i read every year, but when i go back to Harry Potter i just get bored by it... immediately. i refused to go to see the latest harry potter film, even though it got a few good reviews - im looking forward to Narnia though...

LOTR is winning
and yer i understand what you mean kevsal
the LOTR books is so complex and so eventful- its hard to get bored of it even when re-reading it
its actually understanding the complexity of the book which is hard

Lord of the Rings is definitely #1 for me!! Harry Potter is a very close 2nd, though. The Harry Potter books are easier to read than the lotr books, that's for sure. but i think both are wonderful in their own ways.

Lord of the Rings has a much bigger storyline. Everything is much bigger, actually. Production wise it's the best thing history of movies have to give.
I prefer the story behind Harry Potter, but production wise it stands no chance next to Lord of the Rings.

So far I have read the 1st harry potter, the two towers, and Half of the fellowship of the ring. I've seen the 1st hp movie and all three of the lord of the rings, so far I'd have to say the lord of the rings.

THANK YOU!!!!! Okay LOTR was written in like....I dont know shakespeare's time and it took them FOREVER to write the book....J.K. Rowling only took about 6 months to write the first book and to me, that is incredibly amazing. i applaude both authors who can write that talented. i respect them both equally because i know for a fact that i could never do it. personally i hate the movies because its just an easier way of watching a book on film instead of actually READING it, people would prefer to be lazy. i've read all the books and saw all the movies and in the movies, they cut out ALOT of details and most of the story line. i cant remember who wrote LOTR but i do respect the author because thats pretty much where the idea for harry potter came from. think about it.....Dobby...Gollum....talking trees....trees that will kill you....dumbledore....Gandolf ((SP?)) Theres Frodo then theres harry, both courageous and brave. Theres Shalob and Aragog....dont you get it??? it was purely inspiration and i highly doubt either of the authors or producers care if we like one more than the other as long as they make money, they could care less of what they say

i wish i could do more quotes but i cant. the only reason as to WHY people dont understand LOTR is because they dont listen in a classroom. they never do their school work and i'm not judging any of you but the ones who say they dont understand it, well maybe you should try reading books that are a little higher than your level. thats the problem with kids and teenagers today....they pick up a book of a certain leve...could be higher or lower than their usual leve, but its a book.....however....if you keep reading books IN THE SAME LEVEL and not trying to read any books that are above your leve, of course you're not going to understand it. try reading books that are a tiny bit harder than what you would normally read. it makes LOTR alot easier to understand once you've read other books above your level.

Harry Potter
--------------

You dont see him use alot of spells so im assuming he sucks at them
useless without his friends

LOTR
------

One huge army of orcs is enough to tear down Hogwarts
Gandalf alone whacks harry potter with his own magic wand

Result
-------

Its obvious

he wrote it in about 1980s i'm pretty sure but the language he uses is more shakespearean and pre- 1914 type of written language. the film does skip a lot of the storyline out and in LOTR- i find has a very complex storyline. I think that's why it doesn't appeal to everyone.
HP is straight forward- there isnt any undertone or middle story in it that weaves itself in which is why it is much easier to pick up and read

both authors are mega:)

maybe but if the story is hard- its probably because the book was NOT designed to be read by audience in this century.
like it is really hard to read Dickens because of the authorical techniques and way he wrote it to entertain people in 'his' time
not us ..
now im just talking about a load of waffles hehe lol
