This film is directed by the guy who made Buffy The Vampire Slayer and is based on another tv series called Firefly.
Basically it's set in the future after Earth's resources have been depleted and humans have expandced over other solar systems, all of these planets are controlled by the peace loving Alliance, but outlaws oppose to the Alliance and Serenity is just one the outlaw vessels. Firefly is the tv show following the crew of Serenity, but the film is what I am going to talk about. The powerful River Tam is helped escape from the Alliance experiments by her brother and they escape to Serenity to get out of the way, only it turns out that River knows a secret that The Alliance doesn't want anyone to know. Sending an Assassin to retrieve River, the crew try to outrun The Alliance and find out what this secret is, and expose it.

I think the whole concept of this movie is stupid - I hate sci-fi shit.
But my dad did much of the set design, so I got to see alot of the filming get done.

Just because you don't like sci fi, does not mean it's stupid. You just think it is because of your inability to comprehend artistry Joss Whedon has put together. I can understand not liking it because you don't like the sci fi genre, but if you're going to insult the concept, you need a little more than "I think it is stupid" to back up your claims.

I agree.
I think the whole concept of this movie is stupid - I hate sci-fi shit.
And also, just because you don't like it, doesn't make it shit. Who do you think you are? There are plenty of people that will like it.
There wasn't much wrong with the film, to be honest it wasn't that very sci fi in my opinion. Most of the setting looked like it was somewhere in California and it was very down to earth. I thought it was a really good film, the whole lot of thought involved into the characters and background. The acting was good and it would be perfect for anyone to watch, as in my opinion it wasn't really very sci fi.
But my dad did much of the set design, so I got to see alot of the filming get done.
Why are you telling us this?

I never said it was "shit", I said I don't like sci-fi shit. As in, sci-fi stuff. K?
And secondly, I'm entitled to have my own opinions, no? My opinion is that it's stupid. I'm too realistic of a person for anything sci-fi like this.
And uh, to the first person who attempted to be a jackass to me...I wouldn't call it an "inability to comprehend the art", it's more of an uninterest and lack of care. I saw the movie the whole way through, and I totally got it, don't worry. I just didn't like it.

Serenity was awesome.
Sure, it fell in some parts, but not many. As a sci-fi adventure, it was quite lovely. The dialogue is what stole me though. Whedon continues to hit you. If you've never read his Astonishing X-Men run (you should), you can see it in there too. A great film and I'm seeing it again tomorrow. Go me!
"We might have some turbulance and then...explode."
"I don't wanna explode."

You're entitled to not liking it...hell, us fans know that it's not going to be everyone's thing...but if there's one thing that's undeniable, it's that Joss Whedon doesn't come up with some contrived bullshit that passes for most of the movies today. If you actually bothered to look past the fact that it was in many ways science fiction, that unlike most of the movies out there, these characters were real people living in as real a world as possible given that it's the future and they have space ships. Largely you don't need to suspend your disbelief as much as say, I, Robot or The Island in order to believe that this could actually happen 500 years from now.
But seriously though, if you're going to give us your input, you need more than "the concept is stupid because I hate sci fi"...give us specifics as to what (other than because you don't like sci fi) you found to be at fault with it...perhaps maybe even if there was something you approved of in some small way too...but just stating your opinion, like most of the people on here, gets to be quite bothersome, and us Browncoats want more than that you just didn't like it.

I thought that Serenity was mildly sci fi. It was in space and there was a fictional war going in and that was about it.
Sci fi is like darleks and star wars anyway.

i think she's just being close-minded. let her. sci-fi is considered a nerdy genre by some, and certain people don't want to be associated with that.

No, not at all. I suppose when it comes down to it I can be slightly "nerdy" myself, esp. in school related things. I just don't like sci-fi, as I'm a more realistic person and I find it hard to enjoy when I'm thinking in my head, "Well, yeah, that's cool, but it could never ever really happen."

But if you really think about it, this movie is pretty much as real as it can get while still staying in the science fiction genre. Most if it may not be probable, but pretty much everything except for being psychic could possibly happen. There is a lived in feel to this movie...it just these people living their daily lives just trying to survive. While we don't have personal spaceships now, it could happen in the future. A cheap enough fuel source could be found, making space flight something for everyone...and some of it is what people today are working towards.

i see that as a form of close-mindedness.
but hay, we're all entitled to our likes and dislikes.

I loved Firefly, but they only made 15 episodes of it.
Can't wait to see Serenity in the cinema.
Joss Whedon is great.
I loved Buffy and Angel, but then they ended

I thought Serenity had a really good idea behind it but I think that it could have been so much better (I don't know much about the writer or backround, but I have seen the movie). Sometimes it would be building up really well, and then there would be a line thrown it that, not "ruined the mood" but changed it. Regardless, it was entertaining and I had fun.

Joss Whedon likes to keep things off balance...in his works you never know what's going to happen next...you think his writing is heading in one direction and then ends up doing a 180....it makes it fun.

I loved the series when it was on, and the movie I loved even more. Joss stayed completly faithful to Firefly. My favorite characters are still River and Jane

I really hope something happens between Inarra and Mal in the film, those 2 are starting to frustrate me.
Also, Simon needs to stop being so proper all the time and just kiss Kayleigh.

I knew of Firefly when it first aired, but never watched it. Then when I was sampled to Whedon's work on Astonishing X-Men, then subsequently with the announcement and release of Serenity, I got the Firefly DvD set and watched it until I was finished.
I just bought a reproduction of Jayne's shirt from the movie yesterday.
Consider me a browncoat.
