Hey hey! Im a massive Anime, Manga, Hentai fan (problem shudnt of mentioned the last one) and i loved the Ghost In The Shell film.
I also ADORE the spin of series STAND ALONE COMPLEX and fell in love with section 9's arch nemisis, The Laughing Man!
But who is the laughing man? Or indeed what? I believe that the actual character of the laughing man was used thru out the seires because of the reponse the creators got from using the puppet master in the film.

But, i have some theorys to whom the laughing man maybe. I believe that the laughing man is not the brillient computer hacker he appeared to be, but was once a government employed agent hu created the 'cyberbrain closed shell syndrome' seen in eposode 11. I have come to this conclusion because we never actually see the laughing man hack ne thing, onli his copy cats and the army of super skilled children in eposode 11 who call him the "chief". The virus was used to turn those kids into cheap effective barreir designing tools. After he created the virus, he was hired by underground organisations to bring down industrial companies using his vast knowledge of government secrets and even made a graphic designer very rich by using the icon (see my avitar) to descise himself. However, wen fanatic copy cat extremists began to commit murders in his name, he went underground and hid with the hosplitalised children whom respected him so much. I also believe that the man claiming to be the laughing man in episode 6 is killed by non other than ARAMAKI DAISUKE, boss of section 9. I figured this wen he states something to the extent of "we may never find the real laughing man because i dnt believe hes real and those eho claim to be him will wind up dead".

Well, iv onli seen the 1st 3 volumes and this is what i have come up with. Please share ur thoughts on the subject, or nething relating to GITS: SAC or the film.

It's an interesting series, but I tend to forget to watch it when it's on Cartoon Network. One of these days I'll download the series and watch it. I'd comment on the Laughing Man, but I've really only seen the first episode in which he's mentioned.

I have seen the movies however, but those are a different matter.

Your theroy seems logical to me. I also like to think that the quote from Catcher in the Rye, "I thought what I'd do was pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes", will have greater meaning later in the story.

it does, in episode 11, wen the laughing man dissapears and leaves behind his left handed baseball mit (which is also net gargen for imaginary) it says on it "what id like to do, if i had a god dam choice, is by the catcher in the rye" fucking complex stuff!
