I have the same problem!!
Making it straight is hard, if you have long hair you could use a hair straightner.
There is gel that is ment to straighten it out, knda crap though.
Aparently if you wash your hair lots of times it will make it thinner
I dunno lol

There is some hair cut that you can get where they cut certain areas of hair to make it look thinner
http://www.virtualhaircare.com/virtual%20salon/frame_vs.html look at that it tells you

Dont thin your hair it will make it frizzy and undefined cause their will be no weight to keep your hair down. What you should get is long angled layers those will make hair feel lighter and there will be less pooof and frizz.

When you get your stylist to cut it, make sure she thins it. Ask for that. Also get it cut in layers, that helps also. If you can, use a defining cream, or a smoothing cream and straighten it. The straightener of mine that works best is a Helen of Troy one, just look for those.
I have thick curly hair too, and yes, it's a bummer.

My hair is really thick too, but all I do is put conditioner on and leave it for 5 minutes. Then rinse it out and it gets a little bit thinner and easier to handle.

Hair straighteners (ceramic ones), Umberto Giannini Sleek & Chic Miracle Finisher (when it's dry), L'oréal Special FX Studio Line Anti-frizz Smoothing Milk (before you dry it).
My hair's incredibly thick and curly but I manage to keep it almost completely straight (when I want it straight, anyway) and manageable with that stuff and by getting it thinned at the hairdresser's.
