Chinese b/c they are still great to this day.
^shut up the only good thing about the chinese is that they're still around. Even after thousands of years, but they're not great or powerful anymore.
I chose the Romans.

Rome ruled the world for 1,000 years, and they were the most gruesome people to date, so I choose Rome...Gaikokujin has a point though, the Chinese invented gunpowder, and shotguns, but they're commiunists.

Funny, both of the civilizations that you mentioned had a lot of sex...Romans used to get drunk off of wine and have huge orgies, and some Egyptian Pharaohs had over 50 children.

They conquered a vast empire and showed no mercy to dissenters. They also pioneered siege engines.

The romans crucified people, and they salted the fields of the people they conquered, so they would have no chance of rebellion.

Definately the Romans. Any society where the majority of the men are bisexual pedophiles (those orgies didn't require women, you know) is the one for me. Also, the Ars Amoratia is a big plus.

I meant that in reply to the China having 1/7th of the population. I realize both of those civilizations had sex a lot. Nonetheless, even though the Romans and Egyptians had sex a lot, that isnt the reason for why they are great.

Anyone who didn't say Rome should be beaten. This didn't say which was your favourite, it said "greatest." Rome is the greatest Empire ever to reign. It controlled most of the known world, made the Mediterranean a Roman lake, and lasted for almost 2,000 years(In the form of the Roman Republic, The Roman Empire, and the Byzantine Empire). It has had an unarguable effect on our civilization. Most of the languages in Western European are based off Latin, and even English is greatly effected by it.

by the way women were respected much more than in almost every other anqient civilization, and even they could get high positions, start thier own buisnesses and stuff like that. Women were looked at as almost equals until the romans came.

Your choices are awful; where are the Persians? The Indians?
I would have to say the greatest ancient civilization was definately the Persians, if it wasn't for our good Iranian friends the Scythians and the Alans modern Europeans would not exist as they do.
From the list you have given I would say that the Chinese are the greatest ancient civilization.

How is Rome the greatest civilization ever? Most of the things the Romans invented only helped them kill more people in wars. Also, Rome controlled most of the world; known to EUROPEANS, China was larger than Rome ever was.
If your going by the languages we speak why not choose the Indians? They gave us Sanskrit which all European languages except Basque, Finn and Hungarian are based on.

The ancient Sumerians and Egyptians, as they developed farming and agriculture and used their environment to build thei empires, The greeks because they developed the theatre and medicine, as well as pushing boundaries on science and education.
But the romans were the ones who took all of that together and built one massive empire. So the romans.

But the romans took all of that and used it practically and efficiently to build an empire and control their people for over 600 years, and then the Byzantines kept that up for a further 400 years. They had true resourcefulness and used their position in the known world (geographically) to push all their frontiers and create an empire that wasnt topped for over 1500 years.

I'm surprised no one's brought up the Indian civilizations. Its cities are some of the oldest, yet some of the most advanced of their time. Its contributions to modern philosophy, science, and mathematics are invaluable. The ancient Indians invented the concept of zero! They also laid the foundations of algebra which the Arabs improved upon. Their astronomy and astrology were so highly advanced, even Carl Sagan was quoted as saying no other civilization could compare with their discoveries and establishments in the fields of cosmology.
yah, the indus valley civilazations were pretty advanced- they had a whole drainage system and other things. i actually think that chinese, indians, and egyptian civilizations were the greatest, but your free to think as you wish. besides, their far older then the roman and greek civilizations.

The Ancient Welsh were awesome mountaineers. They had the ability to build forts sticking out of rock faces which hung over passes. They would span a whole crevice and then block off all other entry routes, forcing enemies to pass directly underneath the fort while they fired arrows from it.
Of course, they continually attacked each other until a few princes in the Medieval age went and annihilated them, but still, they were fun while they lasted.

Remember the indus valley civilization was crushed when the Aryans invaded.
Most contemporary scholars dismiss the whole notion of an invasion. They believe it was a mass migration, if anything, for they have found no evidence of a battle(s) of any scale. The whole basis of the invasion theory relied on the supremacist belief that Aryans were the master race of Europe. It's actually more commonly accepted that the fall of the Indus Valley civilization was due to unforeseen natural causes, rather than human inflicted.
You can look it up yourself, if you want.
They didn't last that long, so they aren't that great.
The IVC lasted for about 2000 years, a bit longer than the Roman Empire.

Okay time to bring out the uber history here.
First of all, the Nubians, Mali, and Swahili aren't civilizations. For one to have a civilization, they need to have cities. The above cultures did not.
Second correction:
Incas, Mayans, and Aztecs were not ancient civlizations. They may have been civilizations, but they only came about during the time that Europe was in the Mediaeval period, therefore, they can't chronologically be placed as ancient.
I'd say that the greatest civilizations therefore are a tie between Rome and Greece. The reasons are as follow:
Greece:
-Polis system
-First to use organized warfare
-Democracy
-First to have a literate society
-Created science, mathematics, astronomy (with help from Egyptians on that one) in the ways we know them today
-Philosophy
-Gave us real Literature

The One Child policy is coming under scrutiny. Everyone is dumping female babies to have male babies, that way, the family name carries on and the child can provide for the family in later years.

my civilization didnt include having sex with underage boys so they can learn and gods who all way had sex. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pederasty#Central_America
Bernal Diaz del Castillo, in his The Conquest of New Spain, reported that the Mexica peoples regularly practiced pederastic relationships, and male adolescent sacred prostitutes would congregate in temples. The conquistadores, like most Europeans of the 16th century, were horrified by the widespread acceptance of sex between men and youths in Aztec society, and used it as one justification for the extirpation of native society, religion and culture, and the taking of the lands and wealth; of all customs of the Nahuatl-speaking peoples, only human sacrifice produced a greater disapproval amongst the Spaniards in Mexico. The custom died out with the collapse of the Aztec civilization.
Though early Mayans are thought to have been strongly antagonistic to same-sex relationships, later Mayan states employed pederastic practices. Their introduction was ascribed to the god Chin. One aspect was that of the father procuring a younger lover for his son. Juan de Torquemada mentions that if the (younger) boy was seduced by a stranger, the penalty was equivalent to that for adultery. Bernal Diaz reported statues of male pairs making love in the temples at Cape Catoche, Yucatan.

Also, quite a number of the Russian Mongols went to China when Kublai was fighting the province of Shantung (Which was tiny, but well fortified) so that Kublai could leave experienced troops under a small amount of command and lead from the front against the Sung.

Their armies in the jungle were split up into lots of different groups that would make different animal sounds to the other groups in order to coordinate attacks.

Awesomely and radically. Imperium by Robert Harris, if you're interested. I read a book about Pompeii by Harris afterwards, about a Roman aqueduct who finds the volcano is about to blow, but it wasn't as good. Just can't beat books about the Senate.

I viewed a terrible documentary about this recently, which said that that was a myth. I had to stop watching it after half an hour, but it turns out the Spaniard was just tricking them with Christianity and when the Aztecs let their guard down got an army or something.

Well, when they attacked they ran at the foe with clubs and obsidian weapons, into clearings, and the enemy had guns. So they never even got to the Spaniards.
And getsuga, the Aztecs, Maya, Inca, Moche, Toltecs, Olmecs and pretty much every mesoamerican culture got so completely obliterated that very VERY few people in mexico are related to Mesoamerican peoples.

You're totally wrong on this. Mexicans in general look more like Amerinds than Spaniards. There are quite a lot of Spaniards, but most have at least some native blood and probably nearly half has a majority.
The Spaniards didn't have women so they married the natives, rather than the north Americans who didn't.

Europe has a history of epidemics because of their high population density, so disease could spread much faster. Also, none of the possible causes of the Black Death could be realistically halted or even significantly slowed by better sanitation; certainly not by the methods available at the time.
Also, Maya > Inca > Aztecs.
Scondren
04-05-2008, 12:38 PM
Europe has a history of epidemics because of their high population density, so disease could spread much faster.
Also because Europe had a lot of domesticated Animals, which opened up other avenues for diseases/exposure to different diseases (such as Small Pox). Outside the Dog in North America, and the llama in South America, there were no real domesticated animals in the new world, so they had a much more limited exposure.

im not saying that the plauge could have been stopped, but better sanitation could have gone a ways to at least reduce the death count, if not stop or slow the spread. Tenochticlan was heavily populated i think, over one million in the capital of the Aztecs (although i could be wrong, its been a while since i read any history)

So then you just admitted to poor sanitary conditions not being the cause, thus Europeans being dirty or not was irrelevant.

Who else was infected by the plague? Byzantines and Muslims. Both enjoyed a much more hygienic life than Western Europe, and yet still suffered huge amounts of deaths.
Secondly, the black death could not have been prevented by any amount of cleanliness, and science has shown this.

why does science tell me that if i wash my hands and live in clean quarters, i wont get sick as often?
Because sanitation can and does prevent or slow down certain diseases. Cholera and dysentery, for example. But none of the theorized causes of the Black Plague fall into this category.
