Amélie! It's in french and so it has subtitles, but it's the most adorable movie ever. :)
I liked 'Life as a House' a lot as well. 'Elephant' is worth a watch too, I suppose, if you like that sort of thing. I couldn't find it at any video rental places, though. Hmm. I don't know.

i second Pieces of April. it sounds like a really crappy premise, but what they did with it far exceeded my expectations.
if you haven't seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, you're missing out, big time. the most original movie i've seen in a long time.
Pride and Prejudiced, the BBC miniseries, or whatever it was. With Colin Firth. It'll make you fall in love with him, trust me.
The Notebook, if you want a good tug at the ol' heart strings.

Stand By Me is a FANASTIC movie, i loved it. I haven't seen My Private Idaho (thats the one he is in?)
Although i am a bigger joaquin fan though, i love all his movies. Faves are Quills, Parenthood, The Village and Gladiator.

if you like indie/low-budge, i just saw these recently, and they were amazing.
goodbye lenin! (german with english subtitles): about a boy whose socialist mother goes into a coma before the berlin wall falls. when she wakes up, he does anything in his power to prevent her from discovering that Germany is no longer a socialist country. (kind of a 50-first-dates type concept)
bright future (japanese with english subtitles): i really can't explain this well enough to do it justice. google it or something. it was amaaaazing.
The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou: a Wes Anderson film about a middle-aged Jaque-Costeau-type documentary-maker losing his touch. He sets out with an insane crew to find the 'jaguar shark' that killed his best friend. (this description is yucky. it makes it sound like a thriller.) it's a comedy/adventure. with an effing awesome soundtrack!
[not indie, i don't think] Mystery Train: Follows three different groups of people, all staying in the same hotel in Memphis. Hard to explain...it has Joe Strummer! and Steve Buscemi.
oh my, i'm getting carried away now.
