Not really poetry... just found an old folder of stuff I wrote last year...
The Blade
A short Piece by James D. Pullman
January 18th, 2004
I’ve always found any blade to hold a mesmerizing effect on me. The glint on the downward slope towards the blade, the curvature of it’s spine as it runs along to the pointed tip, its ability to overcome its limitations and become something more than it was designed for, I find these all endearing qualities of any blade.
I believe a knife is first and foremost a tool, to be employed in a persons’ service until it passes to a new owner, which most decent blades will do eventually. When I say decent blades, I mean blades which served a decent master, a blade of quality and craftsmanship, highly unlike most blades produced and sold currently. Today’s blades are crafted by machines and produced in massive quantities with low grade metals unless you are willing to spend an enormous sum on a custom piece. I despise the replicas made and sold in stores today, they are a weak comparison to true blades made by skilled artisans. A decent blade is a piece of history, to witness and assist is its purpose, and when its master has taken his or her last breath, it shall be passed along to his or her next of kin, to witness and assist the next generation.
A blade should be respected and cared for, it is an extension of a persons’ body while they are using it and should be treated as such.
